Mesa residents.  Do you think a certian religious institution, that has a very definate political stance might have something to do with the Mesan Residential reaction to this guy?

more Hurricane bay stuff

Mesan residents are doing more fighting bickering, and making more naive comments.

Oh Mesa I hope you grow up at some point and give your residents a reason to like living there.

Does anyone think that with the LRT coming to downtown Mesa, that it might grow up, and become even a little bit trendy?  I'd love to see that happen.

I think it would be good, but we won't see a station in downtown Mesa for another 8 years.

They really ought to think about putting at least one station in the Fiesta Mall / MCC area (the "other" downtown Mesa). Especially if those high-rise condos go in behind Best Buy ("Fiesta Towers").

Also, there's a ValleyMetro transit center near Fiesta Mall which would almost certainly put it through that area. That's actually why they diverged the northern route somewhat close to the Metro Center.
But yeah, it'll be a while until Mesa sees light rail.

Mesa is a super suburb.  It has so many people and decent enough density, that it should have some kind of clout to Make itself more urban.

The extension of the LRT line will be predictable and follow the 60 all the way through the city. Should be exciting, I just pray that Valley Metro is smart about station placement and bus routes that connect to the LRT.

It's a good thing, however the LRT Snaking down  Main won't happen for years.  Now it'll stop just at the edge of downtown.  It's still exciting.

I read in the EVT that Mesa is considered the 4th fattest city in the country.  That seems insane to me How do they grade these things?

On the other hand Tucson was 4th fittest city.

It was all me. My healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise should be used as a benchmark the world over.

I went out to lunch this afternoon and read part of the Republic. There was some interesting stuff in there, but this is Mesa related:
Lowe's hitting more roadblocks in west Mesa

I think they should just give up.  West Mesa is the older side of Mesa, I can't imagine there being to much free land there anyway.

Two Marriots proposed for East Mesa.

One at Crismon and Hampton, and one by Falcon field.  These are the first higher end hotels to be proposed for the city since, The Hilton was built back in the late 80's.   I like this kind of news.  I'm really hoping Mesa is starting to try and grow into itself.

Phoenix Childrens, building small hospital in Mesa

To the East Valley, the childrens hospital building a small facility at the corner of Southern and Higley.  I do like hearing all of this medical news.  It's cool.

Well, I'm making my trip to Scottsdale on the 17th of March. I hate how my boss plans these business meetings during college Spring Break, but I still hope to enjoy in the festivities.  :alc:

Ok I just first got word on that Childrens hospital at Higley and Southern a week ago.  Today they are breaking ground.  Either I am way behind on my news, or Hospitals just get approved funded and built really easy.

Downtown Business owners trying to make night life

I don't think it will work, you're going to need a developer to sink $ into downtown mesa with things like trendy bars and stuff, you have the infrastructure in place, Mesa has what it could use to have a Mill Ave style strip.  But what these business owners are doing is a one night a month type of thing

here's a quote

Quote

Beginning Friday, the coalition of business owners plans to launch a monthly event, “A Night Out in Mesa,” they hope will draw foot traffic to the area and keep people shopping and dining downtown throughout the evening.

On the second Friday of every month, some businesses and art galleries on Main Street between Mac-Donald and Robson will stay open between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., offer discounts and display some of their wares on the sidewalk, said Tyler Hurst, general manager of S’Bistro. In addition, “A Night Out in Mesa” will offer live musical entertainment

Because first Fridays are the art crawls on Van Buren.
But, yeah, it probably won't work. Even Glendale is trying to get in on this whole Downtown thing: http://www.downtowndiningdistrict.com/

Mesa doesn't have the same vibe and rapport as Tempe's Mill, so I'm not quite sure how they're going to work this out without a crazy media campaign.

I think bottom line is, they won't.  Downtown Mesa has the infrastructure in place, nothing else.  It has buildings, ambiance, and space enough to turn into something like Mill.  But Mill is decades old with a reputation of trendy, gentrified fun, and 50,000 students a block behind it.  The only thing that would take downtown Mesa from the sleepy emptyness it is to a hip fun happening spot is a tenacious group of people with a passion for the city and, $, lots of it.
