I deem this news to be officially off-topic.  I was given a gift today, a book called Newport Revisited by Rob Lewis and Ryan Young.  Mostly pictures, all black & white, mostly pre-urban-renewal, very little commentary except for the obvious remarks to situate the viewer (in place and time).  Utterly fan-freaking-tastic.  Numerous aerial shots, very interesting.

Somebody knows how I like to be tickled.  :P

Gusterfell, it includes the picture of the Audrain Building that you posted for me.

I finally got a copy of this book, and it is indeed fantastic!

Another book I'd recommend to UP'ers is the American Institute of Architects' newly published Guide to Newport, by Ronald Onorato.  It's a great book to take on a stroll of the city, giving you plenty of interesting on significant buildings, old and new, in all parts of town.

I stopped into the new Brooks Brothers store this afternoon.  Turns out it's a new store concept for BB called "Country Club."  Rather than focusing on business and dress clothes, as at most locations, this line is almost entirely casual and sportswear, in keeping with the Newport scene.  In addition to ours, BB has opened similar locations in Palm Beach and the Hamptons.

Today should be a wild day in Newport.  On the one hand, traffic will suck.  On the other, it will be nice to see (finally) a few bodies in Newport.  This year has been a dud so far.

What I want to know is, where are all the cruise ships this year?

It's still a little early to see cruise ships on a regular basis.  They usually spend the summer months further north (Scandanavia and Alaska), then they hit New England in the fall, for the foliage.

Has anyone else noticed the new color scheme on the Brick Market Place buildings?  They've broken up the facade into sections, each painted in a different, colonial-Newport inspired color.  No one will ever mistake this for a historic building, but at least now it seems to be made up of individual, smaller-scale buildings, rather than the block-length monolith it was before.  The new look is a much better fit to the buildings' surroundings:

In this pic, the old natural wood/orange color scheme can be seen at far right, while the sections stretching down the street have been repainted:

May be kind of like putting lipstick on a pig. What is it about this area that just can't seem to work? It's actually laid out much better than the rest of Newport, in that there are broad walkways and the shops have proper windows for displays and such. I was in Newport this summer and the whole rest of the city was jam packed, but this area had tumbleweeds blowing through it.

It does look much better though. Maybe it looking less like a suburban condo development circa 1979 will help it out some.

:yahoo:  Perhaps inspired by the success of the turbine at Portsmouth Abbey, Portsmouth voters this week overwhelmingly approved a $3M bond to build a wind turbine at Portsmouth Middle School.  The arrangement would be similar to that at the Abbey, with the turbine powering the school and excess power being sold to benefit the town.

An article from the East Bay section of the Projo about the makeover of Long Wharf Mall...excuse me, the Shops at Long Wharf... that I mentioned a while back in the House of Scrimshaw thread.  The new look is quite nice.  I'll have to take some pictures now that work is wrapping up.

Aquidneck Island is in the process of receiving its third wind turbine, this one at the Aquidneck Corporate Park, between Valley Rd. and Aquidneck Ave. in Middletown.  It's not quite as large as the two in Portsmouth, but it is one more step toward making Newport County a leader in wind energy.  :yahoo:
