Tropicana Considers Expanding- May Build "Boutique" Property Next Door

The Tropicana may build a "boutique" property next door to the existing hotel.  More likely, the property wil be sold to a developer willing to build such a property.  The hotel could be as large as 500 rooms.  Atlantic City is seeing robust growth in rooms, with expansions planned or under construction at the Borgata, Harrah's and the Taj Mahal.  The demand for such lodging appears to be growing in a market which no longer appears content with the standard-issue casino hotels.

AC's trying to be really ritzy and high class in the 00's. They've gotten some primo developments, i.e. Borgata, House of Blues and the upper-end clothing shops which have opened there. I think instead of being the "poor man's Vegas", now it's like they're trying to be a "mini-Vegas" offering Vegas-quality accomodations and amenities but as something you can do as a weekend trip instead of spending a week or more there.

I don't know who told these developers that 500 rooms was a boutique hotel. Boutiques are usually round about 100 rooms.

Saw an article about the new rail service to A.C. This part caught my eye:

With prices like that they really must be going after the upper scale crowd! Now the rich people can spend $200 to get to their boutique hotel!

I wish they'd get better train service to Atlantic City from Washington.  I'm going up there tomorrow, but it's a pain to have to switch trains in Philadelphia.  Oh well, it's better than the bus.
