"•A new Residence Inn by Marriott is being built at 351 West Main St. in the historic district of Middletown for Island Hotel Group LLC."

This is currently under construction in the open space here:

This view is looking south, with West Main at right.  The location is maybe a quarter mile south of the intersection of East and West Main.

The building will be three stories tall, if I remember correctly, and it will look similar to the existing hotel building to its right.  Last time I was out that way they were just begining to frame the third floor.

PS: Middletown does not have a historic district. And West Main is Road, not Street. Way to go, ProJo!

Gawd, if this is a historic district then I'm the Pope.  That stretch of West Main Road is nothing but strip mall after strip mall with some fast food joints tossed in!

Indeed.  The stretch actually does have a fair amount of surviving 18th century structures (the white house fronting W. Main at the extreme top of my photo is one), but these structures are in variable states of preservation, and overall the area is a miniature Bald Hill Road.

Like Mapman said, Middletown doesn't have a designated historic district.  If it were to have one, the area around Easton's Point/ St. George's/ Sachuest Point would be far more appropriate than this sprawl.

There are several interesting old buildings/houses on Miantonomi, and also a little further down Green End.

The Newport/Middletown area continues to best both Providence & Warwick in the numbers of hotel/motel rooms. Warwick is #2, Providence comes in 3rd.

PROJO: 3/30/07

"Middletown’s Residence Inn project under way

Framing is under way for the Gatehouse building, part of the new $8.7-million Residence Inn by Marriott located at 351 West Main St. in the historic district of Middletown. Pro Con Inc. of Manchester, N.H., is the architect and construction manager for the 4-story, 97-suite project. The hotel is being built for Island Hotel LLC, a joint venture development of First Bristol Corp. as manager of the LLC and Kempenaar Real Estate. The 74,705-square foot hotel will offer studios, one- and two-bedroom suites with complete kitchens and separate sleeping and living room areas. The hotel will feature a gatehouse with a large hearth room with bar and breakfast buffet room, indoor pool and spa, exercise room, meeting room, outdoor sports court and guest laundry area. "

maybe this one can be re-titled "in-progress"
