I prefer the charm of the new england cities that follow the rivers and hills that used to be there.  I like being of the priveledge minority that know the secrets of getting around.  Probably the wrong attitude, huh?
I'm with you on this one; I love the crazy quilt of New England cities...but then again, I'm from Newport. You know who's a local based on how confident they seem when walking or driving.

But besides that, I really do love the streets here. You get lost inside the city; it surrounds you. There's no bigger buzzkill for me than looking up one of the avenues in Manhattan. Even though NYC is one of the few places where you can feel as though there is no other type of world other than New York, you still psychologically know the city ends once you see the strip of sky at the end of the avenue. Here, you don't feel that. In Europe (usually) you don't feel that, either.

The best city to not get lost in is Philadelphia.  Their numbered streets and numbered blocks make it impossible to get lost.  Don't even need a map!
Even with a map, I've found Washington, DC the most difficult city to drive through. You really have to pay close attention to the NE, SE, NW & SW street designations. New York City is a breeze. Toronto is pretty good also.

DC was vexing for me since they abandoned so many streets to build gigantic buildings, effective un-gridding everything! But Portland, OR. There's a city that is EASY to get around in. And NYC.

I've started playing with GIS.  I'd like to experiment with mapping key MBTA bus routes in ways that encourage bus-phobic commuters to hop onto one.  But in the meantime this is my attempt to use a weak link in the RIPTA schedule--Sundays--to visually represent the frequency of RIPTA bus routes.
