Rents up, so 'weird' businesses pull out
This article got me thinking, higher rents could pose a problem to the unique retail that Portland offers. With rent treking upwards, its making it difficult for the smaller-indy stores to stay in these higher rent places.

Growing Pearl gains national attention
This article is along the same lines as the above post. Many small locally owner retailers are concerned with the growth of the Pearl District that the higher rents will push them out in favor of national name brand chains. I think retail growth within this core area is good for both local/chain merchants.
