According to the ALDI website it is scheduled to open on December 15th. They were pretty good about hitting their target dates in Cranston and Warwick.

Yes, they have a sign out front, too, that says Dec. 15th.  There is also nice new street trees along the Smith St side of the building.  :)

Let me rephrase... I haven't been there in a long time.  That's where I go for weiners, when my stomach (and other parts) can handle them.  I used to go that route all the time to get downtown, but never need to anymore because of where I live now.

Quote

For example: when a new 24-hour market, Gourmet Heaven, opens on the corner of Weybosset and Union streets early in 2009, it will have been financed through the fund.

Open 24 hours? Really?

Thought I'd post a quick review of ALDI.  While it was super clean (I went the first night it was open), I wasn't overly impressed.  You need a quarter to use the carts, meaning you have to remember to have a quarter.  Sure, you get it back when you return it, but it's kind of a pain.  Everything is store brand stuff (though it all has different cutesy brand names).  They have one aisle with name brand stuff.  The produce is pretty much non-existent as none of it is fresh.  There's also no deli, butcher, fish or any of that.  It's all pre-packaged like the produce.  Prices are decent, but nothing better than Price Rite.

It was a nice store, but I don't see myself shopping there very often with Price Rite just as far with same (if not better) prices, a good deli, good meats, and good produce.

I'm assuming the reason behind this is to ensure that shoppers will not take off with the carts so they won't have to drag their bags of groceries home. But I don't a think a refundable $ .25 fee is much of a deterrence. If I had to drag 3 - 6 bags several blocks I would gladly let them keep my quarter.

I've been to the Save-a-lot store  ( http://save-a-lot.com ) down the street from me, and several other discount markets, and I would never buy meat, chicken or fish from them. It just doesn't look fresh or good. And even Walmart carries non-brand name food items. And the pre-packaged lunch meats, hot dogs and cheese that these discounters carry are terrible tasting. I only go for snacks, soda and can goods. If I could afford to, I'd go to Whole Foods every week.

I think it's a deterrent from people leaving the carts scattered in the parking lot. It helps them not have to pay someone to retrieve them every half hour.

Price Rite actually has pretty good produce and meat and the fish looks good, though I don't get fish very often.

Their fish is fine - I just wish they had more selection. They focus on Tilapia which is almost as bad for you as red meat. Cheap lobsters though!

You're actually supposed to put them upside down like that before you cook them.  It puts them to sleep, so it's just a tad more humane.  My friends in Newport do it all the time with the ones they catch when they have dinner guests.  it's a great little crowd pleaser.

Sales of non-brand "supermarket generics" are exploding.  Watch for this to become a major retailing trend and seriously start to eat into sales and profits as many consumer goods makers will start to wonder what to do to compete against their own distributors...
