Yeah it was originally a vaudeville theater and was used as a movie theater later on.  I thought I read somewhere that it will eventually be restored for performing arts with the ability to show movies as well.  I could be wrong, though.

As kayman mentioned, I agree that an independent theater (newly built or adaptive reuse) running indie films year-round would work well.  The Lyric could allow more special screenings to complement the Alabama and an indie theater, or show a lot of indie films until an independent theater is established.
