A thread in the Grand Rapids forum where someone said "I don't even know many companies with their head quarters in Michigan anymore" got me thinking.... what corporations do maintain their HQ here in the state.

Let's lay out some criteria and see what names can get attached to the list.

Let's say 1,000 employees or $1B in annual sales.  I want to see the list of large companies (start another for smalller ones if you want).

Here's the "off the top of my head" ones to start the list out right (in no particular order):
  • Amway/Alticor (Ada)
  • Ford  (Dearborn)
  • General Motors (Detroit)
  • Visteon  (Van Buren Twp)
  • Delphi (Troy)
  • Stryker Corporation (Kalamazoo)
  • Whirlpool (Benton Harbor)
  • Meijer (Walker)
  • Spartan Stores (Grand Rapids)
  • Steelcase (Grand Rapids)
  • Herman Miller (Zeeland)
  • Haworth (Holland)
  • Howard Miller (Zeeland, probably smaller than my criteria, but they're the global leader in clocks so hey, they can be on the list)
  • Perrigo (Allegan)
  • Foremost Insurance (Caledonia)
  • Bissel (Grand Rapids)
  • Wolverine World Wide (Rockford)
  • Kellogg's (Battle Creek)
There must be more.  Let's see'em.

Not anymore.  They consolidated to the Sears HQ in Hoffman Estates, IL, closing the office in Troy.

There are many sizeable ones in Oakland County, but I can't seem to think of many that haven't been mentioned.

In Lansing (some of these have been mentioned):

- Jackson National Life Insurance
- Accident Fund Corporation
- Auto-Owners Insurance
- Michigan Millers Mutual Insurance
- Capitol Bancorp
- NuUnion Credit Union (formerly Michigan State Employees Credit Union (SECU))

Do they have $1B in sales and/or 1,000 employees?  (admittedly I have no idea)

Beaners does not meet the criteria, I assume.

Hagerty Classic Car Insurance (Traverse City)
Four Winns Boats (Cadillac)
Citizens Bank (Flint)

Pirates Cove (Traverse City)
This one is a stretch because I don't know if they employ 1,000 people and I doubt they pull $1B but being a putt-putt place I doubt it, but they do have over 20 locations from Maine to Florida and as far west as South Dakota.

Edit:

MY 400th POST!!! Whoohoo. :alc:

Masco is a deceiving entry on the list above - as the Manoogian empire (Masco) owns dozens of subsidiary companies in the building and other trades.  Kitchen cabinet makers, plumbing fixture makers, office furniture makers, the list goes on and on...

Among these is Merillat (kitchen cabinet makers) which was founded in and remains based in Adrian near Jackson.  They've got mfg locations around the country - and a huge dealer/distributor network.  Not sure about $1B, but they could easily be pushing 1000 employees nationwide.

They probably have 1,000 employees, but I doubt the $1B sales.  As of 8/1/06, they had 52 stores.  If each store has 10 employees, 1,000 total is right on.  Also, I see that they are getting their product into local grocers (saw it at Family Fare...not sure about Meijer).  That will help sales a bit.

Haha...I meant 19.23076923 employees per store.  Those were old numbers too.  I know they've built a few stores since then as well, so add those in.  That darn Devil's Dancer will get you Sean...I know you know what I'm talking about ;)

Do they have 1,000 employees or over $1 billion in sales, though?  I'm pretty sure they don't have 1,000 employees yet.  BTW, they are now Bigby Coffee (Big "B").
