Synovus closing 39 branches and cutting 850 jobs company wide. With branches throughout the Southeast, they are mum so far on where those cuts will be. First half in early 2011, second half later in the year. AJC article here.

Not good news. Hopefully Columbus will escape the brunt of the cuts.

Closing three branches: Wynnton, North Highland and one out Highway 80 in Phenix City. While I hate when people lose their jobs, I hope this paves the way for a more profitable and stronger Synovus.

Any idea how many local jobs that means?  Any corporate jobs?  The real local hurt will come when Synovus is bought by another bank. Too many believe that Synovus is so weakened it is now a takeover subject.  The Ledger reported it over the weekend, and BizJournals reported it back in June '10 as noted in one of the comments.

I have heard 250 in Columbus with the rest coming from around the Southeast. This was from an executive I know at TSYS.

Well that makes sense. The rumors that the earlier layoffs were closer to 1,000 (than the announced 850).  This pretty much offsets gains by attracting NCR. This really doesn't bode well for Columbus, and especially downtown Columbus, does it.

Pratt Whitney's adding 180 positions to its plant on US 80, WLTZ reports. It appears some of the jobs from Connecticut plant closings will be going to Singapore and Japan as well.

Books stores like that will be a thing of the past soon....sad but no loss IMO. Just look at Borders. Glad to hear it will be replaced by something.

I thought that these unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) statistics might be of some interest to everyone:

Atlanta (city): 11.8%
Augusta-Richmond County (consolidated city): 11.3%
Columbus (consolidated city): 9.9%
Macon (city): 13%
Savannah (city): 11.4%

Georgia (state): 9.9%

NCR has several jobs posted on the Ga Dept of Labor website.

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the NCR plant in Columbus? Are they a good Employer to work for?  I tried to to contact a couple of u, (Hamlet) but for some reason I cannot send a pm/personal message?! Thanks ;)

I don't have any reports on NCR as an employer.
