So what are the major modes of transportation in the region? Like Bus or Rail Systems, Ferries, Airports, etc?

In Hawaii:

Honolulu/Oahu



By Air

1. Honolulu International Airport - major airlines; domestic/inter-island and international.
2. Kalaeloa Airport - mainly a commuter facility used by unscheduled air taxis and general aviation.

By Land

1. The Bus


2. Waikiki Trolley - mainly used by tourists but serves Waikiki, Sea Life Park, Downtown, etc.


*3. Possible Light Rail/Elevated Train System

By Sea

1. Hawaii Superferry - interisland transportation. There will be two ferries.


2. Honolulu's Commuter Ferry - set to begin service in mid-September from Barbers Point Harbor (Western Suburb Area) to Aloha Tower in Downtown Honolulu. There will be two such ferries.

So what are some of the other major modes of transportation in the region? Alaska, Puerto Rico, Guam, USVI, etc? Since we have members from AK & PR here I will try to look and post information about Guam, American Samoa, Northern Marianas and perhaps the US Virgin Islands in the near future.

$842M plan to fix Hawaii harbors

Gov. Linda Lingle unveiled an ambitious, $842 million plan to repair, expand and ugrade Hawaii's harbors over the next six years, adding more space for ships, trucks and cargo.

The plan was developed by the state Department of Transportation and the Hawaii Harbors Users Group, a group of businesses and stakeholders frustrated by years of inaction and bureaucratic delays on various plans to fix the waterfront.

"We must expand and improve our harbors to ensure Hawaii's continued economic growth," Lingle said at a news conference at the State Capitol.

Improvements, at Kahului Harbor on Maui, Honolulu Harbor and Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor on Oahu, Hilo and Kawaihae Harbors on the Big Island, and Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai, will be paid by the Harbors Special Fund and will not use general funds.

Hawaii imports 80 percent of its consumer goods, vehicles and fuel, and 98 percent of those imports are shipped by sea. Volume is expected to climb by as much as 27 percent in 2010 and by as much as 93 percent in 2020, according to a press release from the state.

Lingle's proposed supplemental budget unveiled Monday included $124.4 million to start the first phase of the Harbors Modernization Plan.

Some of the money to pay for the projects will come from increases in harbor user fees and land leases.

Some of the improvements include new breakwaters and piers, a 70-acre container yard in Honolulu and barge and terminal improvements, among others.

Maui Economic Opportunity Inc. announced plans to build a transportation center in Pu'unene on a 10-acre parcel provided by Alexander & Baldwin Inc.

Alexander & Baldwin donated half the 10-acre site to the nonprofit and sold the remaining 5 acres at a steep discount. When completed, the new facility is expected to accommodate MEO's growth for the next 20 years.

MEO, a nonprofit whose activities include providing bus service for the elderly and disabled, will consolidate all of its transportation operations at the facility. The center will be home to a bus storage and passenger transfer station, maintenance facility, bus washing and fueling station and administration offices. The facility is expected to accommodate MEO's growth over the next 20 years.

The site is in Central Maui, close to residential and commercial areas of Kahului and Wailuku and the island's primary commercial harbor and airport.

MEO, a part of the nationwide Community Action Agency program, has provided services for the elderly, disabled, immigrants, youth, offenders and the economically disadvantaged on Maui for 42 years.
