Looks like work will be getting underway soon on the new parking garage to be built between the new Omni Hotel and the AT&T Building, next to the Convention Center, between Houston and Throckmorton streets.  It will help serve the Convention Center, Omni, and the SoDo neighborhood.  The new garage will replace the Convention Center parking lot currently on the site.  The design of the garage will feature corners made of colored glass, and will incorporate Art Deco influences to provide an interesting facade and avoid the usual criticisms of garage design - and better still, the garage will feature ground-floor retail space on both Houston and Throckmorton, putting the entrances and exits on the side streets instead.

Here's a rendering of the finished product:

Aspects of the design were heavily influenced by the nearby old City Hall building, now the Public Safety & Courts Building, built in 1938:

The rendering appears to be more of a massing with color. It looks interesting though.

It is a bit of a rough rendering, but it gives an idea.  There aren't a lot of good renderings out yet.  The other side features a zigzag Art Deco motif with contrasting zigzag colored glass, and two more different-colored glass corners.  The glass corners have been designed to create interesting "prismatic" light effects inside the garage.

Sounds really unique. I'm sure I'll like the finished product, and I'm always a fan of garages that incorporate retail/restaurants on the ground floor.
