Great Knoxville shots!

I have to say without any hestitation those are some outstanding shots of Knoxville. You have a darn good eye in framing your shots.

I would also like to say thanks for taking the time to take and share these pics with us, and that it's great to have a new active Knoxville forumer around to help represent the city.

I love knoxville... of course, I married a knoxville girl.  Still, I think it has some of the most beautiful residential areas of any city.

Great shots.  I tell ya, that old city is so beautiful and unique.  I hope Knoxville never does anything dumb to jeopardize it's existence.  Very few cities anywhere in the country have historic neighborhoods so well in tact.  Beautiful stuff.

Alright, well I am going to resurrect this thread. I didn't want to start a new Knoxville photo thread if there was one already here. Sorry this one is around two years old! Here are some photos I took of Knoxville this past week while riding in the car. Sorry about the quality of the pictures, but I figure they are better than none.

Intersection of Central and Broadway in North Knoxville. Some good restoration going on here. I really like this neighborhood. This area would be perfect for putting in street cars, again, running up and down Broadway and Central.


Same area. Some of the older buildings. Love this stuff.


Once again same area. More older buildings. A nice older church building peeking out at the top.




Same area looking east(?) down Central Avenue.


Central and Broadway. Neat antique and furniture stores. Wish it was more active with pedestrian traffic. I think they are working towards that in this corrider.


Cool corner building. Same area.

Church on Broadway. Knoxville has a myriad of unique historic churches. Not sure what this one is or is called.


Sorry everyone bad picture, but I had to post it. I love this building. I saw some construction/restoration started on it again. It is called M??? Villa right off Broadway. Dang I forgot the name! It is like town houses or stoops you see in New York, Chicago, or similar large city. Too bad it is near the salvation army.


A closer shot of the M??? Villa. The electric pole is covering the sign. The original sign (cornerstone perhaps?) with date and such. I will update later when I find out what it is called and year originally built.


Another great building. I wish I had the money to restore it!! Not sure for what it was built. It is located on Broadway where there is a bridge over the railroad gulch.


Another nice restoration. I am not sure what this building was or what it is becoming. On Broadway and W Jackson.

More pics. This is the Sunsphere and L&N depot (I think?) looking down Henley St./Broadway towards downtown, coming up on Summit Hill and Western Ave.


Shot at Broadway/Henley St. at the intersection of Western Ave. and Summit Hill Dr. On the left is the Holiday Inn (connected to the convention center, I think) and on the right, the Hilton.


Looking down Western at same intersection. Part of the L&N depot is on the left and student apartments can be seen in the background.


Ugh, sorry for the poor shot through the car window. The L&N depot and Sunsphere again.


Here is the intersection again with the Hilton and First TN bank tower in the background. The brick wall near the foreground is part of Lincoln Memorial University.


Shot of DT on Henley St.  You can see the First TN bank tower, the BB&T bank tower, the Hilton, and a few more landmarks I need to find the names of so I can identify them!

University of Tennessee at The Hill.



McClung Tower - Humanities, Foreign Studies, Religious Studies (I think); next to the Andy Holt Pedestrian Mall and Hodges Library on Volunteer Blvde.  It sits in a large plaza with a parking garage underneath the plaza.

McClung Tower again.

UT has some beautiful buildings and some eyesores.  Neyland being an eyesore in my opinion.  They have done the same at UT Chattanooga.  Lupton Library being an eyesore.  Whey didn't UT decide on a common theme for it's buildings?

Common theme, no.  But common building material yes.  Older buildings were built with a dark orange brick.  Newer (modern era and now) are built with a lighter colored brick.  The library, as a bridge between the two, combines both.  Dark on the bottom, light on the top.  There are exceptions such as the concrete art and arch. building.

I haven't been back to the campus since I graduated in 03, but I don't really remember too many bad buildings.  Certainly the 60s modern, car-oriented development hurt the pedestrian, walkable nature of the campus.  You see a lot of driveways and parking lots fronting buildings and huge setbacks.  Hopefully it's returning to a more sensible approach now.  

By the way, Timmay, great photo tour.  Even though I lived there for five years, I don't think I saw some of the areas you went to.  It looks like there's some great old building stock left there just waiting for redevelopment.  Even more than in Nashville.  If you want to start a real estate development company with me, just send me a message.  We'll get in there and revitalize the area!

I yeah I agree.  The buildings are not the best, but they don't look bad either, IMO.  I like the campus a lot.  It has a great mix of old and new and flows from one area to the other (DT, the fort area, all the way to the end of Cumberland/Kingston.  However, it is very big!!  The pedestrian view isn't the best, but it's not so bad either.  They have plenty of pedestrian walkways and a pedestrian mall that takes up part of Andy Holt now (not sure how long that has been there).  However, they do have shuttles which help tremendously because from the Ag campus to the Engineering buildings is a good 30-45 minute walk.  A few new buildings are going up or are planned to go soon which should help with some for the parking lots and blank spots.  The new health center is one, going on the corner of Voluteer and Pat Summit(?) where the rock use to be.

As far as Knoxville it has incredible potential.  I was quite impressed when I moved up here, and got a feel for the city.  It has great older buildings and neighborhoods prime for restoration and reuse development.  If I had the money, I would definitely consider sinking it into Knoxville.  So one day I might take you up on that offer Nashvillain!!

I forgot to ask flith.  Is the new UTC SimCenter building going up in Chatt yet?  I think it was supposed to go near where the old steel yard is?  Great idea, will be a huge boom to Chattanooga!

I haven't seen or heard anything new on this one. I also haven't been in town in about a year.

I do like Knoxville's old neighborhoods and the Old City.  Unfortunately, my inlaws live on the far West end of Farragut and we never have enough time when visiting the family to see the "good" parts of Knoxville.

This is the Maplehurst Ct. and Hill Ave areas.  In between the university and DT close to the river and Henley St.  Some interesting architecture and buildings.</p>

The work being done to the Henley St. bridge.

On a side note and somewhat off topic.  What's the deal with these editors!  It displays HTML code when not needed and I have had much trouble in both FF and GC browsers.  I am also having trouble with Google's blogger new editor.  So I dunno what the deal is?!  Anyways, just a quick rant!

Same parking lot looking towards...I'll have to look it up and figure it out.  If you look closer in the middle and slightly to the left above the tree line is a mobile crane.  I think this one was on a barge and not related to the HSB renovation.  I think there is an aparment/condo building over there.
