New City Market!!!! $60 Million Development!!!!

This is exciting!  Sounds like there is quite a ways to go though before we see anything concrete (no pun intended).  Mr. Gillespe is doing some great things for the Lansing/East Lansing area.

Their talking about a fall '08 groundbreaking. As long as City Council doesn't cause a hassle this will probably happen on or nearly on schedule.

I'm with Hood on this one.  If anything, the time table set is quite fast and ambitious.  Unlike numerous other proposals in the 1990's and earlier this decade, these proposals are actually setting out concrete tentative start dates instead of this simply being a concept, and something a developer dreams to do.  If there is no other local downtown developer I take at his or her word it is Mr. Gillespie, and he has two large completed or under construction projects on his belt to prove it (i.e. Stadium District, Prudden Place)

Why can't we use dynamic image tags?  This has prevented me from posting quite a few renderings, rendering these discussions kind of bland without the renderings.

Hello all...new member here.

I'm intrigued by many aspects of this project, but being of a preservationist bent, I have some concerns.  Does anyone know the plan for the Michigan Dyslexia Institute?  It's a fine Victorian house on the corner of Shiawassee and Larch, with a beautifully restored exterior.  According to the LSJ, Gillespie doesn't have an option on the building, but the site plan unambiguously shows that corner occupied by his development.  I know the house is out of context, but is there any discussion of at least moving it to another site?  It's a really lovely house that I admire every time I pass that corner, and there are plenty of vacant lots in the historic neighborhoods around town.

I'd definitely suspect that the house will either be moved, or it will be surrounded.  I do not see it being demolished.

Update:

City Purses $1M Grant for City Market

A $1 million state grant application to clean up the current Lansing City Market site is scheduled to go before Lansing City Council tonight.

It is likely to be assigned to one of council's committees and, according to city officials, the application only can be sent to the state Department of Environmental Quality if council also approves a development agreement to sell the current market site to East Lansing developer Pat Gillespie.

Gillespie has plans to build a $24 million to $30 million retail, office and residential development along the downtown riverfront. The city plans to build a new market on adjacent park space.

Just an update.  The Market Place development was approved Monday (August 18), setting course for the construction of a new Lansing City Market directly south of the current location, and the construction of two-to-five mixed-use buildings up to 10 stories in height.

I'm not sure when to expect to see plans for Market Place.
