I thought there was a Fidelity thread, but couldn't locate it...
PROJO:
"Newest Fidelity building will cost $65 million
The newest building on Fidelity Investments’ campus in Smithfield will cost more than $65 million and is scheduled for completion by October 2008. Construction of what will be Rhode Island’s largest office building began in late summer of 2006 and is being managed by Gilbane Building Co. The third of five buildings envisioned by the master plan for the campus, the newest structure will more than double Fidelity’s office space, adding more than 577,000 square feet. “Our new building will enable us to add 800 people to our work force here in Smithfield,” said Joseph Pratt, public affairs director for Fidelity Investments. “We presently have 2,200 employees in Rhode Island. When the new building is fully occupied, there will be just over 3,000.”
“The efforts we have made over the years to encourage growth by Fidelity and other financial services companies continue to reap dividends for the state,” said Governor Carcieri, who was scheduled to tour the construction site yesterday. Boston-based Fidelity Investments has nine regional financial services centers across the country."
Is this the building that the downtown workers will move into??

Yes.. Eventually.. I hope they keep the downtown building, perhaps even buy it.. Hopefully they like PVD downtown, because I don't think Fidelity is anti-city per se.. The Smithfield site is a regional phone site..
Not to start a rumor because its baseless, but the City of Boston purportedly turned down the owner's proposal for a Fidelity sky scraper.. They have slowly been paring down Boston holdings.. Wouldn't it be a boon to Providence if a Fidelity high rise was built?
You telling me that a big financial co. relo-ing from Boston to Providence wouldn't set off a wave? I bet one company like that could turn PVD into a financial hub like Charlotte is becoming..

We really should be Boston's Stamford, except not as office park-ie.

Best possible advertising for life in RI.
Also, an excellent alternative to the Providence Downtown Thingee.

Smithfield businesses looking forward to a boost when Fidelity moves 500 jobs to town. Fidelity announced Thursday that it plans to increase employment in Smithfield from the current 2,300 to 2,800 in the first quarter of 2010.
