Panel Selects Hilton Over Marriott

The battle between Hilton and Marriott for the 1000 room convention center hotel at Port Everglades is over and Hilton is the big winner.  Supposedly, the plans call for an undulating glass structure of 27 stories (soe accounts place it at 32) with a terreced effect in a nod to the waterfront location.  I wonder whether there will be substantial changes as this goes through the approvals process.  While the number of new hotel rooms in Broward County is astonishing, I think the need for a convention center hotel is evident, if only because this is dictated by the needs and desires of most convention planners today.  Whether the broader hotel market can absorb the new room inventory is another question.  Perhaps there will be a shakeout of older properties.
