It's nice to see that Charlotte is planning on LRT in the future.  Imagine the traffic if there was no mass transit & it continued to grow like it is now!  I don't even want to begin to imagine what it would be like.  You already have horrendous traffic.  It seems even worse then Detroit's traffic a lot of times, and we have a couple million more people in our metro than Charlotte has in its metro.

I find it interesting that they chose to put it from downtown to pineville along South blvd, instead of from downtown north where most of the development is going. To me, that is having little foresight. Cabarrus County (for example) is exploding, and moving away from Charlotte is now en vogue to excape the crappy schools and high taxes. Why put the rail line in an already established area, but even moreso, an area that is rapidly going downhill and will be an undesireable destination in 10 years (South blvd corrider just south of "south end"). Like i've stated elsewhere, I'm not going to ride this just to ride a train... and I won't have any use for it otherwise - and most people that they are targeting to "lessen traffic" won't ride it either because they don't live in the area that the light rail will serve.

This is nothing more than the City Council trying to spurn life into those areas. They undoubtedly see the crumbling area (unlike Central Blvd of the 80's and Monroe Rd of the 90s) and have a plan... at least I applaud them for that, but IMO it's not going to work because the people that will ride it  presently ride the busses. Those people are not the people with the disposeable income that spurn business.

IMO they need to go I77 north to Huntersville at least... that's where the money is, and where it's going to be in the future, and those are the people you want coming downtown to support the city.

Neo just told me they are putting rail lines north.

I'll use it then to come to the Panthers games :D

BOO HISS BOO HISS! - Here I was going off on folks... Oh well. I will temper my rage next time when I'm more informed :D

What  the CATs people REALLY wanted to do was to build the LRT line along Park Rd. to Balyntine ..however the expense was too much to make it viable.

Here are the links to the PDF's that have the detailed uptown station plan concepts for Charlotte's new light rail line due to open in 2006 and construction start this fall.  Very exciting stuff!!

I really look forward to the development this will cause along the south line.  I'm imagining that a lot of it will just be residential which will be great and make for one heck of a skyline!  Though if it is true about the 12 story height restriction outside of the 277 loop then this would of course not be the case.  Though Washington DC makes very good use out of it's height restriction and honestly wouldn't mind that type of development.  It just means they'll have to build more of it to get the same effect as the high rise structures.

One thing I noticed on the 2010 vision for the CBD was that they had a large park on the freeway cap...I personally think with a lot of residential now coming to the CBD that Charlotte needs that park NOW and I'm honestly missed on why they haven't put a large park downtown.  Freedom Park is a little unimpressive and not close enough to downtown and any park within downtown is very small.  Any word on the park deal?

A cap/park would be WONDERFUL, but it's not going to happen until sometime down the road.  As for parks, Independence park seems nice.  That's not far from Uptown.  Marshall park is also nice, although it's the size of my pinky nail.

I would love to see South End become more and more a part of Uptown, and I can't wait to someday (sooner than later) see the Knights' ballpark moved there.

Mecklenburg County controls the Parks around here and they have been cutting the Park budget so I don't see this happening anytime soon.

Very nice renderings and I like the stations, but wasn't there supposed to be a multi-modal station combining the light rail, amtrack, high speed rail, and the city bus service?

the Multi Modal Station won't be completed until the 2010's and it's not part of the South Corridor, but it's part of the whole transit plan, it will be located otherside of Uptown on West Trade across the tracks from J&W University.  Currently right now, it is still in planning and NCDOT just finishing buying the land for the station.

Its great to have one big central park but its also great to have a number of small "pocket" parks throughtout downtown.

I just visited Charlotte on spring break while looking at UNCC. I really think that the new transportation will compliment the city greatly.
