Yes, thank you for your input ducksauz, and if you know anyone else at AS220 who would care to comment on the plans, please encourage them to do so, we're all obviously interested in the plans for this space.

The Phoenix reports that AS220 plans to close on the purchase of the Mercantile Block in August, and begin renovations in December or January.

Quote

While Wheels bar and Clark the Locksmith (both of which currently occupy the near-vacant Mercantile) want to stay in the complex, AS220 hopes to get a market-rate tenant to inhabit the bottom floor, possibly an eatery or retail venture.

...

“I think it reinforces Providence as a strong arts and cultural mecca,” Searle says, explaining plans to open up the back Martha Street entrance of the complex to give the area more of a pedestrian vibe.

I know Wheels sometimes has cookouts on the Martha Street side of the building. I'd love to see someone make formal use of one of Providence's alleys to prove the viability of such. RISD will have a loading dock slash plaza at the Chase Center, I'd like to see more of these urban forms in the cities, not everything needs to be one use only.

I'm actually a little bit surprised they're going ahead with their plans, since the tax credit program was canned.  Great news!

AS220 to partner with MIT on new Fab Lab

At the risk of sounding redundant, I'm surprised to see plans still going forward on this after Mumbles™ yanked the historic tax credits, but hey, more power to 'em!
