On Oct 5, there will be a Ghandi statue and pocket park unveiled on Alexander and Trade St. It will feature a 8ft bronze Ghandi statue on a brick and marble podium. I got the flier at the India Festival this weekend. I dig statues, parks and art, and Ghandi's good in my book... so A++ over here.

Oh that's cool. That's for sharing.

I know Meisian Corners has been begging for a dessert bar Uptown.  Looks like it might finally happen.  CRAVE is supposed to go where the current Avenue sales center is in the Cotton Mills building on Graham St.

Thats great news. When is this supposed to open?

They still haven't even applied for building permits, which they announced they would seek in August.

In other Avenue retail news, it looks like upfit for the convenience store FINALLY has begun.

Queens Table...the anonymous group responsible for the Statues at the Square and Queen Charlotte at the Airport is proposing to put in 20 ft modern looking "gateway" structures on S Tryon St at 277.

You can see a rendering of it here (very last page)
http://www.charmeck....kshopAgenda.pdf

I think this is a great place to put in some gateway pieces on Charlotte's main street that let people visibly know they are entering Uptown. However this particualr art is very generic modern looking. I guess I just expect better out of the Queens Table group.

I've always felt uptown needed some better gateways. Speaking of which weren't there plans for a Camden Gateway, whatever happened to that, anyone know?

I do not think we need a gateway into Uptown. A gateway on Camden would be better I think.

That rendering is terrible. I have no idea what the hell those things are supposed to look like or represent.

That aside, I'm all for more public art. Especially if the public doesn't have to pay for it!

Yes, it's hard to tell just what it is.  I would love to see more info on this.  I was in Kansas City on business awhile back and they had these wonderful art pieces at certain bridges going into the city that lit up at night.  I think this might be along the same lines.

I can't tell what the hell it is, the orientation to the bridge/street, etc.  I too would like a better rendering to get the full feel of this project.

I noticed in that presentation it mentions, "...Queens Table is donating four monuments to the City. Two monuments
would be erected in 2009, and two additional monuments would be erected at a future date."  Are all four monuments for this project, i.e. two on one side of the bridge, two on the other?  Or is this considered one monument and there will be an additional 3 monuments to be erected?

The Coyote Ugly building at College & 9th has been getting worked on for the week or two. First it was a fresh coat of white paint (on the 9th facing side) and today a new awning with wood pillars was installed. Not sure what's going in there, but given the looks of the awning and patio I would assume its another bar or restaurant.

Luna Lounge is going there. It is owned by the same people as Kiss Lounge and The Sunset Club

ok. should i be excited about this? after all, they'll be my new neighbor. i'm not the least bit concerned about noise though, i never really heard anything from coyote ugly. what are sunset and kiss' reputations? i saw a hookah pic on kiss' website and would certainly welcome another hookah spot uptown :)

they have a myspace up that has a may 2009 date, but talks as if its been open for a while and already has a reputation, lol

This is interesting.  The end of this article mentions that if 5/3 can lease its space in the University area, it would like to move Uptown and put its name on the building.

Interesting that 5/3 is wanting to move uptown. I suppose that want more recognition with having their name on a building?

They've been wanting to move Uptown for at least 2 years, back when they were still independent as 1st Charter.  It has also been rumored both in the press and elsewhere, that they would anchor the proposed office tower at 631 N Tryon (where the Renaissance Apts were).  Obviously with lots of empty space coming online, I'm not sure they wouldn't move into an existing building, but like the article says they either need to sell or lease their current HQ.

Yes, I can confirm that. My girlfriend worked for FC before the acquisition and she said they were looking to move uptown before the 5/3 thing ever happened.

There had been a topic that discussed the installation of art/statues/markers on the S. Tryon & 277 bridge...

Here's a rendering. It's fine. A little too modern for my taste, but that's sheik now.

^laaame. i think a modern approach is appropriate here, but this is just a very clunky amateurish design. it would benefit from just removing an element or two, but even then, for a 'signature' sculpture for the city there is no concept, no reference, no relevance, and nowhere near enough elegance to get by on aesthetics alone.

also, i'm not sure exactly what kind of material the clear parts are, but i imagine they'll start to look dirty and aged very very quickly.
