Point Park U. has big plans for Downtown

This sounds like a project that would be really good for downtown. They're going to build a new theater to replace the current one in Oakland, among other things. The article I linked gives the details.

This should really help to beautify that section of downtown, and the expected increase in students living on campus will add a lot of liveliness to the streets. Oakland is busy at all times of day because of students. This won't be as many, but it can only be good for businesses and the general image of the neighborhood.

My only concern with this project is that more property is being added to the already large list of non-profit-owned land in the city.

I too am concerned about the tax-exempt status of properties... but I think overall this should be a good thing for downtown... especially when it comes to vibrancy and the physical improvement of a lot of our worst blocks downtown.  And 3 parking lots will be eliminated!
