Here's a collection of photos taken this year of several celebrations and festivals in Honolulu that I hope you will enjoy.

Many of Honolulu's festivals/parades are usually held at Kapiolani Park at the edge of Waikiki, Kalakaua Avenue, Chinatown/Arts District, Ala Moana Beach Park/McCoy Pavilion and for Muslims usually Manoa District Park but occasionally Ala Moana. You can also find festivals/parades/etc along Waialae Ave or the Keehi Lagoon area (popular with Samoans).

Honolulu Muslims celebrate end of Ramadan
Festival prayers, games celebrate end of monthlong fast

1. Members of the island's Muslim community gathered at Manoa Valley District Park to observe Eid al-Fitr, a three-day holiday marking the end of Ramadan. Ramadan is the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims abstain from food, drink and other sensual pleasures from dawn to sunset each day. Eid al-Fitr is Arabic for "Festival of the Breaking of the Fast."


2. Dr. Mohamad Abdalla delivers the Eid khutbah, or sermon, to the gathering yesterday.

4. The family event began with prayer and continued through the day with festive food and games.

Every year on the 5th and 6h of January 5-6 Isabela celebrates the holiday with a two-day festivity that includes dramatizations of the arrival of the three Magi and their pilgrimage to find the baby Jesus, adore him and present their gifts. The glorious outcome is celebrated with a fiesta at the town square (Plaza Manuel Mar�a Corchado y Juarbe) that includes a Velorio de Reyes, a traditional song fest in honor of the Magi; handcrafts fair, Trovadores contest with prizes, puppet shows for children, Christmas music and carolers, typical food and drinks.

San Juan celebrates the island's patron saint with week-long festivities, including religious processions, music, dancing, games and beach bonfire parties. At midnight on the first day of festivities, revelers walk backward into the ocean or nearest body of water three or seven times to ward off evil spirits and renew good luck for the coming year.

Here's a few pics from the recent Native American Pow Wow at Thomas Square Park near my old neighborhood. Thomas Square seems to be the park of choice for Native Americans in Honolulu as they've been holding Pow Wow's there for years.
