It's great to have money being reinvested into the Peace Center. The surrounding area has seen such a resurgence in the past 4 years, and it's nice to see one of the original building blocks for redevelopment not being left behind. This new work should only contribute to further development and investment along the Reedy and along Broad...

The majority of the money will be spent on the interior.  According to the Journal article that is.
Excellent.  Thanks.

I know this thread has been dormant for a while, but today I found something quite interesting.  I was linked to the Garvin Design Group website to see renderings of the Mast General Store in Columbia.  Well, after looking around the site for a while, I came across some detailed (new?) renderings for the Peace Center additions.  The renderings of the new additions look great; very upscale and modern.  Check it out.

Great find! The walk-though gives a good understanding of the site changes and addition. I wonder if the fountain out front and the one between Peace Concert Hall and the Gunter Theater are both really going to go?

Yes indeed, this will be a grand upgrade to the 20-year-old facilities, if accurately portrayed by the renderings.  :)

It appears the fountain in front will be replaced by a much more pedestrian-friendly plaza, which will include two grassy areas bordered by curving, low profile water fountains similar in design to the upper plaza at Falls Park on the Reedy.  The current tree-covered oasis between the two main indoor venues will apparently be replaced by a more pedestrian-friendly "staircase" and new water features.

TD Bank has committed to give the Peace Center $1.5 Million over the next ten years.  The gift will help build a new amphitheatre (officially called, 'TD Pavilion at the Peace Center') and redevelop the surrounding land along the river.  The new amphitheatre, which is still being designed, is expected to be completed by 2012.

  I love this! Not only is it great to see the river front being invested in/enhanced, it's nice to see TD Bank stepping in to invest in the community.

$11.1 million of the $21.5 million needed has been raised so far which is enough to let the project move forward with construction slated to begin in Spring 2011 according to an article this morning in the G-News. No shows will take place at the Peace Center next summer due to the construction.

The Peace family is donating $5mm.  That coupled with the city's part and the TD donation seems to cover the $11.1 mm raised so far, UNLESS the city portion is not counted in that.

31 individuals, businesses, Foundations, and the city have donated money for the project.

The entire area around the River is going to be drastically changed with this and Reedy Square. Who knew things could get even better than Riverplace and the Riverwalk??

I like the changes to the steps that take you down to the River/amphitheater. The covering announcing that access point will be nice!

It looks like a great improvement for the City of Greenville!

It looks great. I like the area in the middle as it is now with all the different levels and the brick stepped fountain, but the new design will be awesome and will open that whole space up. Looking forward to it.

That is the only reason I remain a bit torn about the changes to the area between the two indoor theatres and the outdoor amphitheatre.  I call that little area a "hidden, beautiful urban oasis" that still surprises long-time residents and first-time visitors to this day.  The beautiful variation of shade trees, the water flowing over fascinatingly laid brick, the curving pool with tiny falls, the multiple levels of public space to look out over the river, and etc.  It is the quintessence of man-made urban nature.

The new design certainly will be impressive and much more functional, however it appears to have less intimate/attractive character and will simply be a generic transition space rather than a pseudo-organically flowing work of art with broad appeal.  In the end, I have confidence that functionality will prevail over artistry when comparing the current and future designs.

In case this has not been posted elsewhere on the Greenville Forum, THE LION KING is booked into The Peace Center in Greenville.  It will open June 12, 2012 and close about 4 weeks later on July 8, 2012.

Click "Next Stops" on the show's website.
