I've put together a rough spreadsheet of the Charlotte Region's Population. I used the counties listed in Wikipedia's Charlotte CSA Description for my county list (although the only extra NC county included, compared to the Urban Institutes' Charlotte Region Definition, was Alexander). Please make suggestions or suggest corrections as needed. I have to say the total came in a little lower than expected (although some of that might be due to having to use estimated data for SC populations at this point). LINK

Edit: corrected spelling of Wikipedia

The Urban Area number is from the 2000 census, during which Charlotte was only 540,828.  So Charlotte city was 71% of the Urban Area.
The US Census has redfined their definition for UA. Under this new definition Charlotte, Gastonia, Concord, and Rock Hill UAs will be rejoined. The estimates using the 3 year ACS stats puts the population at just over 1.2 million. I will add the link later.

According to the U.S. census 2010, Detroit has lost 25% of its population plummeting to 713,777 making it now the 18th biggest city in the nation....which means Charlotte is up at #17 now :)

There is some debate over on the state-level NC Census thread about Louisville jumping ahead of Charlotte due to it's city-county consolidation that took place since the 2000 count. That would leave Charlotte at 18.

The census ranks consolidated cities based on their balance population.  That is the county's overall population minus the population incorporated towns in that county.  The census bureau does not include the suburban towns as part of their statistical analysis, Therefore, even though the Louisville-Jefferson County metro government has 741K people about 200K of that will not be included into "Louisville's" population because those 200K are in suburban towns.
