I want your guys input because I really can't get a fix on the area. It's the fifth largest metro in the south and top 10 in GDP. Top 20 in tourism dollars. Virginia Beach is the most populated city in the state, while Norfolk is 2nd, chesapeake 3rd. Norfolk has a growing downtown, but is it a big city? Or just a old navy town? Outsiders are willing to comment too. What do you think?
#1 - Probably not a major player at all. We have port activity, due to being near the water. We are a cul-de-sac off of the major interstate (i95). We have a few Fortune 500 companies, but nothing to be really proud of. Norfolk Southerns main operations are all elsewhere, they only use like 12 floors of their own building.
#2 - Region is known for it's port. Busch Gardens and Williamsburg / Jamestown. We've got some sports stars that are often in trouble in the news. And we're home to nutjobs: PETA and Pat Robertson.
#3 - High paying corporate jobs? I'm sure the people with them think so, the ones without don't. Region needs more productive, high paying non-corporate jobs. Ones that don't receive their money from the US Gov't, ones that receive it from other countries in trade for product or services. This is the case with all of America.
#4 - Sports team? Who cares. People here don't rep their hood. I see plates with people representing the areas they came from. The Navy folks probably represent wherever they came from. Also I'm not sure the people could afford to pay the ticket prices. Admirals and Tides are cool because the tickets are fairly low cost. Sure fans of specific sports all cry they want a team, but are they willing to give up their childhood favorite for the new local team? What would we call it, the Hampton Roads Thugs?
#5 - State & East coast. Port and Military.
#6 - Depends on who you are and if you actually have goals. I don't think it's a good area. Conventionally what it had going for it was low cost of living and access to water. But with #1 removed, I don't see the area as good. It's a soul-less area. Creative class flocks it. Wealthy hurt it. Young people should flee it. Sorry, but the cost of living doesn't match what the area offers.
You will hear people tout the normal SOP (symphony, opera, playhouse) stuff. Yes we have those, but who doesn't. Every major metro does. This standard solution to make an area artful is full of fail. I'd rather see the people be creative versus collecting tax money to buy a little of it.
If I wanted to buy music instrument stuff, say a mouthpiece for a saxophone the only choice is a lame student store called Music & Arts. There is nothing here that caters to wind music folks outside of the school supply places (Not that I'm a kenny G). Yes, Moe's is cool, and Alpha music is cool, and we have Guitar Center. MARS turned into a thrift store which recently seemed to die. There are a ton of thrift stores!
If I want to buy HAM radio stuff, time to drive to Northern Virginia to go to Ham Radio Outlet. There is nothing that caters to this stuff here.
If I want to buy electronics components to prototype a project, time to mail order. Other areas like Vegas and Atlanta and Cali and Austin have Fry's. DC has some suppliers. Here it's little old Cain electronics which was bought by Norfolk Wire (who bought and killed Priest). They are eliminating the electronics stuff it seems.
Sure I could say brick and mortar is dead anyways, but the lack of these businesses shows that there is a lack of this activity.
Which makes one think, hmmm what goes on here?
Look at our .com history. Weak to say the least.
Don't tell anyone, but when it comes to data centers where companies put their up-and-coming youtubes, Hampton Roads has little to nothing. No peering between carriers (to go from Verizon to Cox IP traffic goes to DC where there is peering). Yes, Hampton Roads has some data centers, but they are honestly a joke. But there isn't much demand for anything better, cause people here don't do !*#1.
I think the motto here is... get it from da' gubmint. Start a contractor, get in there, and that's how wealth is created. Not by launching the next you tube.
I know people peg me as negative, I didn't used to be. It got this way from trying :-) And I won't hesitate to give away my great ideas.
