I snapped a few photos of construction of UNCG's new School of Education.  Construction began in May.

The Zoning Commission denied the rezoning request for a $45 million student housing complex near the College Hill neighborhood.  City Council will take it up next.  No word on whether the developers will scale down / redesign the project to make it palatable for the neighborhood association, which opposed it.  More here.





UNCG has selected the design team that will create the plan to renovate the quad.  They also announced that construction will begin this Spring on a $30 million 400 bed residence hall next to Tower Village on Spring Garden St.  I'm was over the moon that the Trustees decided to renovate instead of tear down the quad this past summer.  I can't wait to see what ideas they come up with.  More here.

It will be demolished, although I hope the owners would at least save the Newman & Whitney sign, refurbish it and put it back up.

UNCG has posted the plans for their expansion into Glenwood. It's supposed to amount to about $500 million and will totally change the way Lee St. looks, with mixed use (commercial on the ground floor with student housing above) buildings lining Lee St. from Aycock to Tate st. and a pedestrian tunnel underneath the railroad tracks.

Excellent plan.  I hope that a commuter rail stop is located somewhere bear this plan.  NC A&T U  should jump on board with creating a similar plan with the section of Lee Street near campus.  Gateway Research Park is well underway and looks good. Kudos for UNC-G and NC A&T on that.

UNCG broke ground today on its new $30 million residence hall at the corner of Kenilworth and Spring Garden Streets.  The hideous gravel lot is finally gone!  And with it a lot of parking spaces.  Hopefully UNCG will start leaning on students to use public transit more since it's free for students.

DCB is correct. There are some major changes to the first draft of UNCG's expansion plan into Glenwood. Here is the link for the update plan.

It will extend the campus seven blocks and include student housing, retail, recreation center, educational buildings, police station and a pedestrian underpass beneath Lee Street. Construction on housing will begin this summer. What a great plan to help revitalize Lee Street and remove some of the blight. based on renderings it looks like UNCG will redevelop land stretching from near downtown almost to the coliseum. UNCG alone may just as well redevelop most of Lee Street between downtown and the coliseum which is badly needed. On top of that this project extends 3 blocks south of Lee Street. This development may put Lee Street street scaping on the fast track. Looks like a number of the buildings along Lee Street are 4 to 5 stories. The entrance to the underpass is very attractive as well.

Where can you see the plans for this?  Hard to tell much from the news vid.

I think this is still more of a concept because as I've notice that there are several existing businesses located within the development boundaries that would likely remain. The plan shows the Great Stop service station being replaced with UNCG school buildings. Its likely that service station will remain along with Beef Burger, the historic Burger joint. Beef Burger (use to be Biff Burger) is one of two left in the United States. The other is in Tampa, Fl. Long before the rise of Burger King and even McDonalds, Biff Burger was a popular burger joint across the country. The original Biff Burger building still stands on Lee Street and was even featured in the movie "Bull Durham" when the Durham Bulls played against the Greensboro Hornets at War Memorial Stadium. The burgers are still cooked on the original grills from the 1950s with the classic, secret Biff Burger sauce.

indeed, very interesting architecture. Terracotta roofs were very common in many buildings in Greensboro that have been demolished long ago.

The ribbon cutting for Province Luxury student living community was held today. As one of the nicest student living communities in Greensboro, its located on the edge of downtown located near Greensboro College and UNCG. Leasing is not cheap. They start out at $750 for a 352 square foot studio. Some of the apartments are town home style. The community is located next to the newly built Spring Place student Apts across the tracks.

Here are some renderings of the UNCG mixed-use project south of Lee Street and the railroad and Lee Street underpass project which will connect to the future development.

Also the PDF link below shows UNCG's vision which will include a future "west campus" on Spring Garden Street west of the Greensboro Coliseum. A map in the link shows potential acquisition property and it looks as though UNCG wants to purchase almost all the land along Lee Street between downtown and the coliseum. Every major college has a "university strip" Lee Street could eventually become UNCG's strip. I certainly don't mind that because it is being tastefully done in an urban fashion. I'm for anything that transforms Lee Street. Its a big eye sore between the coliseum and downtown and its lined with shady looking buildings, tattoo parlors and an adult video store. Lee Street really needs to be repaved. Its quite a bumpy ride on some sections. Its an embarrassment when we have visitors from out of town seeing that. There are plenty of renderings in the pdf link.
