This is a great program and will help our state tremendously as one of our largest challenges remains a lack of moderate priced housing that is attainable to young professionals and located in convenient and desireable locations. The transit oriented development proposed for Wallingford is really an encouraging sign.

Wallingford plans a much bigger development, 371 units of mixed-income housing in an underused area near its train station. With the coming of commuter rail service on the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield line, this could become a paradigm of transit-oriented development.

Both towns have prepared plans for "incentive housing zones" and submitted them to the state. When they are approved, as is expected, they will begin the bid process.

About four dozen other towns are following the two HOMEConnecticut leaders, and that's a good thing.

If Connecticut is to retain young workers, and older moderate-income workers, they must have places to live, homes they can afford. Without this housing, the state's economy becomes less competitive.
