Wow, what happened to adhering to the Urban Code?

This is ridiculous. All they had to do was make the building front Ribault St and put the athletic fiels in the back (which was the original plan from what I can recall). This is just going to be a mini-Dorman.

Looks like suburbia wins another one in Sparkle City.

I'm guessing the reason they didn't do that is because it would require tearing down the existing building before building a new one. I doubt they wanted to go months/years without an actual YMCA building.

Good point. It's still no excuse though...

They could build a parking lot on the existing athletic fields, build the new building in the current parking lot, then put new athletic fields where the current building is.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the New Pine Street YMCA is today at 5:15 pm, on the fields behind the current YMCA.  I hope to be there.  They do need a new building, even though it is unfortunate that it fails to address the street in an urban fashion.

They say the building will face Ribault Street.  Does that mean the ball fields will be on the side of the building toward Pine Street, and the front right on Ribault?

No, they are using some word trickeration on us. The building will faceRibault St, not "front" it. There will be ball fields adjacent to the street and a driveway that goes around them. The new building will sit where the current ball fields are.

Spartan is correct.  I went to the groundbreaking ceremony this evening.  Here is a picture of the site plan for the new YMCA:

This is the same layout as a diagram I posted earlier in this thread.  I wasn't making that up...

Thanks for posting the site plan westsider, although I don't recall anyone accusing you of making stuff up.  After reading the HJ article, I was simply hoping that they had decided to move the building forward.

Did you or anyone else have a chance to ask the officials why the building is so far off the street?  It could be a safety issue.  If the ballfields were behind the building and right on the rail trail, then the fields would be harder to secure.  Having the field in front may be easier in that way. (doesn't mean I like it though)

However, we all know that it was more than likely a money issue.  Putting the building back there means that they can stay in their current building much longer.

From a logistical standpoint, it does make more sense to leave the current building in place while they build the new one, and then tear down the old one so that the YMCA is never really closed.

Once completed, i wonder if they would consider selling the old existing parking so someone could build something on Pine Street?

Just a quick update on the YMCA.  They've demolished the pool in the back of the current building, and it looks like foundation work will begin soon on the new building.

Walls are going up now for the new YMCA.

They also have a live webcam so you can follow the construction as it progresses.

Construction on the new Spartanburg Family YMCA continues to progress.  It looks like the framework of the building has almost been completed.

Also, a good article today with a lot of details about the new facility.

Construction on the new YMCA has progressed quite a bit in the last few months.  Today they were lifting HVAC units onto the roof.  They've also starting cladding the rear of the building, and laying brick on the side (see second pic).

It's going to be demolished.  A playing field and parking will take its place (see site plan I posted further up this page).

It's been a while since this thread was updated.  Here are two photos I took this weekend:

The exterior is nearing completion.  Grand opening is April 19.
