I've been to all three in Tampa and they are in the same price class. My excuse for this behavior: Tampa does not have great restaurants.

Just a note: I like the atmosphere at Flemings the best.

Shula's 347 Grill is way below in the cost scale compared to Ruth's Chris. Look's like there's a Shula's Steakhouse in Tampa, which is their more upscale brand. So Flemings is up with that and Ruth's Chris then? I was hoping Flemings would be slightly more moderate.

As for chains, I'm not particularly snooty about it, I'm far less likely to hang out at one of the mall restaurants (though every so often (like really so) Uno's hits the spot) but I've had very nice lunches/drinks at Shula's and enjoy the atmosphere there. If Cheesecake Factory weren't in the mall (say it was in the Waterplace buildings) and it weren't so mobbed with suburban types (I'm snooty about them), then I might go there more. Oh, yeah, and if the food were better too.

i thought you were from like burrilville or foster-glouster or something... wouldn't that make you a rural type (which is better than suburban types in my book)?

Not that I frequent the place (or would admit it if I did), but...okay, I'll give you that.  But weigh that against the multitude of independent restaurants here that do fabulously well on any given night without the advantage of being merchandized with things like hotels or the mall.

oh snap.  there's a good point..i'll just file it as an exception to the rule.  the cheesecake factory is ALWAYS spilling out the door and someone told me a while back that the providence restaurant was one of their highest grossing?

I was walking through Waterplace yesterday even and saw that they were testing different colored lights on the Westin (old and new). The lights were alternating slowly between white and pastel shades of red and green. It looked very nice.

i had thought that i didn't like the lighting only at the very top of the building, though it does look nice.  i realized that it's so that the light doesn't blind the people in the condos up there.  however, i noticed lights on the side of the building by the parking garage pointing upwards.  i can't wait until it's completely done to see what it looks like with all the lights on.

Ah, the lives of the good and great of Rhode Island.

"Kenneth F. Guarino, a Rhode Island native who runs an international pornography business, bought a condo on the 29th floor for $1,610,900 in April with his wife, Elvira H. Famiglietti."

Rather more swish than his previous residence, the federal penitentiary in Fort Dix, New Jersey.

"RESTAURANTS

Il Centro to open in Westin at Agora’s

The Westin Providence is getting a new restaurant as the owner of a South Kingstown eatery will take over the hotel’s Agora restaurant.

Dino Passaretta, owner of Liliana’s on Tower Hill Road, will open Il Centro this fall in the second-floor space once occupied by Agora.

The opening will be a return to the Providence restaurant scene for Passaretta, a city native.

He last owned a restaurant in the city — Moda — which closed about four years ago. He opened Liliana’s in the spring of 2007.

Ralph Izzi, spokesman for The Procaccianti Group, which owns the Westin, said the company decided to lease the space to an independent operator, as it does with Fleming’s on the first floor.

“It’s a successful model,” he said.
