According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK population is projected to reach 71,100,000 in 2031. Many newspapers deal with this subject, wondering about the evolution of the UK society and how to answer effectively to the fastest demographic growth since the baby boom. Read for instance the (rather pessimistic) article "record immigration sees UK population soar" from The Daily Telegraph where you also can download (pdf) the "ONS report on national population projections".

The data is interesting but doesn't really paint an accurate picture. For example, Barcelona has a population of over 4 million in the metro area. Outside the metro area, there isn't too much for quite a few miles. The city populations are misleading. Sort of like saying that Atlanta has a population of 400,000 when in reality it is close to five million.

Is there Metro stats available?
I guess I was surprised to see the limited amount of cities w/ 1M plus populations. As you mention, it may be skewed due to metro populations.
I'd be interested to compare and also see newer figures.

The data from World Gazetteer is accurate to me, at least for the European cities. What is arguable is how some large cities are grouped (Manchester-Liverpool, Randstad, Rhein-Main, Alma...), but considering the high density of those areas, why not ?
The metropolitan areas are written in boldface. To know their composition, just click on the name, then "cities" at the top of the new page.
So, according to World-Gazetteer, the 25 top metro areas in the European Union are (millions) :
London : 13.22
Paris : 11.89
Rhine-Rhur : 11.83
Randstad : 6.59
Madrid : 6.32
