This story is from Smitty's notes. I was not aware of this site and wanted to share it here:

The Skyscrapers of Winston-Salem

Under the “I bet you didn’t know that” heading, I stumbled on an interesting Web site that highlights some our city unique architecture. The site is called "The Skyscrapers of Winston-Salem" and includes cool tidbits of the history of tall buildings in the city. Did you know the Nissen Building at one time was the tallest building in the state (1927)? Winston Tower (formerly the Wachovia Building) was at one time the tallest building between Atlanta and Washington (Best view to see all three Triad cities and the Blue Ridge Parkway on a clear day). The R.J. Reynolds Building was the model for the Empire State Building.  And, the Wachovia Center designed famous architect Cesar Pelli is the only granite-domed skyscraper in the world (no jokes, please).

The Web site is a great resource for those who are new to the community or newly aware to find out more about our city's architectural history. We drive by many of these structures every day, but may never have learned the story behind them. This site might answer any questions you may have had. Personally, I think the best view of Winston-Salem city’s skyline is along Highway 52, traveling north from I-40 at dusk. A sight I never get tired of looking at.
