Cosby helps Bennett College raise $2.7 million

Bill Cosby helped Bennett College raise more than $2.7 million at a black-tie event as part of inauguration weekend for school President Johnnetta Cole. The comedian took the stage for 40 minutes Friday night at Greensboro's Grandover Resort for the $250-a-person gala, prompting laughs from the nearly 800 people in attendance."A lot of people said that this wasn't going to happen," Cosby said of the event. "But ... Cole went to the Bennett women ... the Bennett women, you see. And from what I know about fund-raising, the women will get the men to sign the check."

Cole said the donations were a testament that the historically black women's college in Greensboro "could not only survive, but thrive."

Maya Angelou and Coretta Scott King attended the gala, which ran two hours later than anticipated. The party concluded a day of events on campus celebrating Saturday's inauguration of Cole.  Bennett College is one of two historically black women colleges in the United States.-- ASSOCIATED PRESS
