Seoul. After watching the Soccer World Cup, I definately started to admire this city that rised from being a small, isolated city, and became a metropolis.

My favorite is the often-overlooked Kuala Lumpur. It's like Singapore's wilder brother.
English-speaking, very cheap, great food, good shopping, generally safe streets, good transit system, lots of sites to see, and you gotta love the Malays.

Although I love Singapore, Hong Kong has it beat, I think. It's just so lively and interesting. A total 24-hour town whereas Singapore shuts down around 2am on the weekends. It's also much less suppressive feeling there, which is ironic when you look at the West's view of the Chinese vs. Singaporean government (even Shanghai feels less suppressed than Singapore).

Americans are not allowed to enter North Korea.  Though... there have been a few who have been able to get a visa some how.  They have tours actually, if you're intrested.  Do some google work and try to find people's tour diaries.  it's pretty intresting :)

Next to Tokyo, I'd have to vo te for Seoul as my favorite east asian city... simply because i've been there a lot and absolutely love it.  Needs more parks though ;)

Bangkok- great restaurants, incredible hotels, stimulating atmosphere and the lazy Chao Phraya flowing through it all.  My only problems with Bangkok are the horrible pollution and the sad fact that most of the old city has been destroyed for new buildings, many of which are not attractive.

Post any comments here.  :)

I was in South Korea in April, 2002. I was very impressed with the people. They were very kind and very well mannered. Every time I got on a bus in Seoul, their cell phones were turned off and you could sit back and enjoy the ride.

When I visited the World Trade Center, I went to a industrial trade show and the many booths were well attended. In the center were also many different types of products and the people that were in charge of them tried to answer my many questions. One businessman whom I had not ever met  invited me to lunch at a very good restaurant on the top floor that had a magnificent view.

I made contact with a trade representative over the internet. He invited me to visit his country. He made all the reservations for me and gave me a guided tour of all my business interests. We boarded a train for Taegu or Daegue in southern South Korea to visit some factories that made products for eyewear. It was a great trip. The countryside was very beautiful!

Quite an experience! I would recommend going to South Korea!

A friend of mine went there and has an article featured within the BBC website:

http://news.bbc.co.u...fic/4353274.stm

Check it out.

Side note : lived in Hong Kong for a little more than a month and would have to say it definitely beats out the city of Zhanjiang, Guangdong, China where I taught English for a year.

No, of course those cities could never seriously be compared.  Although, the contrast between the two is extremely humbling.  ;)
