Interesting article about Eastland in today's Observer; DeBartolo Development (whatever its official name is) offered $3M for the interior of the mall, and it looks as if time is running out for the mall.

Has anyone been lately? Is there anything left in the inside?  The mall's new website shows the same stores as about a year ago, which I'd doubt is accurate.

Eastland Mall will likely close by March:

Whoa....looks like there's some decay on that building.

I'm calling first dibs on that horrid, even by '70s standards, sun logo above the entrances!  MINE!

Paid a site visit to Eastland on Sunday afternoon.  Man!  What a shock.  I hadn't been there in 15 years, but my childhood was spent on that skating rink.  The giant and cool mod chandeliers that hung over the rink are gone, all the planters have been ripped out (the ones that remain have plastic plants in them) and I could only spot two national retailers:  Kay Jewelers and Burlington Coat Factory.  Nearly brought tears to my eyes.

^Did all the sneaker stores move out? They are national chains also.

And the 1970s era GNC, next to the vacant Sears (with the wood paneled entrance)?

Even Radio Shack left about a year ago.

I was looking at the directory online and see that even the Cinnabon closed, to be replaced with "Cinn-A-Bun" or something- hilarious!

Just file it under "it was only a matter of time" - Burlington Coat Factory is closing its Eastland location. It's last day will be March 20.

Wow!  That store just opened a few years ago.

Sorry, Eastland, when a Burlington Coat Factory even gives up, there are issues.

I have to admit, that it's probably been 2 years since I drove by here. I did over the weekend... and WOW! It was beyond what I had read and heard. The wrecking balls and dynamite can't come soon enough here... Hopefully something gets done sooner rather than later... So much potential for this land.

I can't see this place lasting for long without anchors.  Then again, Mondawmin Mall in Baltimore lasted nearly 35 years after Sears left with no large anchors.

The mall directory online (http://eastlandnc.mallfinder.com) shows a pretty good range of in-line tenants- is it current?  The mall also had plenty of foot traffic (literally) the last time I was there.  I agree with you.

With Burlington closing I don't see how it is economically feasible for any small store to stay in business there.   Am I incorrect in assume that  all mall tenants contribute to the building's operation costs (security, utilities, property tax)?  If so, I can't imagine the small stores being able to shoulder the costs alone.

I agree with you- and as the mall was losing money when Glimcher owned it, the small stores + the then-anchors weren't paying enough to keep it afloat.

StevenRocks, how in the world did Mondawin Mall in Baltimore survive for 35 years without anchors yet remain over 90% leased (as I read) and finally got an anchor back- a Target?

I am not sure but I think that it probably is not.

Mondawmin's local trade are never abandoned the mall.  Neither did its management company.

What filled the vacant anchors while it was anchor-less?

I think the Sears at Mondawmin was divided into smaller stores.  Murphy's was there, and could have possibly taken part of the Sears space.

This place can't even keep BCF, things must be in horrid shape.  I will be very, very surprised if Eastland makes it to the end (heck, middle) of 2010.  Over 1 million square feet GLA and all that is going to soon be in there is around 50 stores and a church in the old movie theater.

It's time for this one to go.
