Would someone/anyone with information on projects in and around metro Atlanta please post pictures/details/approved status of these projects so that we can get a running total of what's truly going on?  It seems that the only thing being talked about in Atlanta right now is the Symphony Tower (1180 Peachtree), the new tower in Buckhead and Atlantic Station in Midtown...  there HAS to be alot more...  thanks in advance!

Just noticed this on another thread:

IKEA will open June 29th I believe.

When will the 1180 Peachtree Open?

What about the new symphony hall itself?

The Symphony Hall hasn't received all the funding - it will likely be several years before we ever know.

It would be a nice bit of creativity to add to the city. It should be funded.

This is the booster in me talking, but it could become famous like the Sydney Opera House.

The design of the ASO Hall is impressive, though not entirely unique.  It still would be unique enough to draw attention.  It's also the kind of thing that will make Atlanta more of a true city.  It's great to see the city maturing with the arts.  The problem is funding.  It's going to most likely have to come from private donations.  I just don't think there is enough public support money available.  With the many needs of the city, it's going to get harder and harder to fund these types of projects with public money.

That's what many people think.

I agree, it would become more of a true city with a new ASO hall llike that.

What do you define as a TRUE CITY?
Atlanta is a city in every sense of the word... what do you mean exactly?? We are not lacking in architecture or in arts. If you say so, then you must not get out into the city much.

ASO hall will just be the home of the ASO and will be located in a dark alley between two tall skyscrapers... not the most appealing place for the building which looks spectacular (and expensive). Would be nice if it had a nicer location, next to a park, a body of water ( alas, we do not have Sydney Harbour in atlanta) ... i guess best option is to be perched high above 75/85 so truckers and commuters can see it from the road.

I should have worded it this way instead: a true BIG city.

I didn't mean to imply that Atlanta isn't a "city", but when you think of the preimere cities in this country (LA, NYC, Chicago, Boston, etc) and the world you think of not only their size, but recongition in arts, landmarks, famous buildings, etc.  Which is not to say Atlanta doesn't have any of this, but it order to really move to that next level, the city needs more of it.

I do agree that they could have picked a better location for the ASO Hall than where it's going.  It will be a little out of place amongst all of the high rise buildings.  Even a little further up the street beyond the High, the building heights are lower, it would stand out better.

In some ways, Atlanta is still a regional city - not quite a 'cosmopolitan' city yet.  Cities such as Dallas or Houston are closer to that level than Atlanta - but it's all a little relative anyways...

The difference - for the southeast, Atlanta is indeed a 'big city', but nationally it's not quite there.

According to the GaWOC based in Loughborough Univ. in the UK, which ranks cities' importance, ATL is a gamma/minor world city. The GaWOC is generally considered to be the authority on such matters.

The levels on the GaWOC and a few represenatives of each level:

Alpha/World "Capital" City (NYC, Tokyo, London, Paris, LA, Chicago, etc.)
Beta/Major World City (SanFran, Moscow, Hong Kong, etc.)
Gamma/Minor World City (ATL, Boston, Washinton DC, Miami, etc.)
Some evidence of becoming a world city (Richmond, Charlotte, etc.)

Things that would move ATL higher:

-Better transportation system
-An event held in a city often and/or landmark known throughout the world (like Indy 500 in Indianapolis or the Statue of Liberty in NYC)
-More business headquarters
-a livelier nightlife
-a livelier downtown
-a denser, more definite urban core
-better smog management
-more parks and other public facilities
-more "traveling" events to be held here (like a Super Bowl or a concert)
-an international event held here (like the Olympics or a G-8 type of conference)
-better sprawl mangement
-good infrastructure
-a distinct "identity" (like NYC is "The City that never sleeps")

Things not list, but I'd like to see, and could probably help its standing:
-A denser skyline
-Better relations w/ the South
-The BeltLine

I think that more appealing than the exterior design of the ASO, is that it is supposed to be one of best laid out for symphony halls in terms of accustics.

That's what I heard. It'll be a nice thing to look at in ATL.

The ASO will appreciate it, I'm sure.

Site clearing is occuring right now - they just recently finished demolishing the warehouse that was on the site.

30 Allen Plaza has neared it's height - so it looks now what it should be looking like.

So with these two buildings under construction, the proposed 3rd Allen Plaza building in the connecting block & now under construction the Novare condo development directly north of 30 Allen Plaza - that adds up to 4 continious city blocks under construction.
