Orlando Business Journal:
Wilder Cos. pays $9.3M for Orlando site, preps new project
The Wilder Cos. says it has paid $9.3 million for the Days Inn Orlando in Florida, which it plans to demolish to build a $75 million retail, luxury residences and office development called Rialto.
The 695-room Days Inn Orlando was foreclosed on several years ago and the owners filed for bankruptcy, according to a press release from Boston-based Wilder Cos. The hotel fell into disrepair while the community around it grew into a dynamic neighborhood and commercial district, according to the statement.
The new 350,000-square-foot Rialto will break ground this year and will consist of approximately 20 shops, fine dining restaurants and cafés, 200 deluxe condominiums, and nearly 40,000 square feet of office space on 13 acres.
Demolition of the hotel is planned for this summer, clearing the way for new construction to begin later this year. The retail and office space is expected to open in 2006 with the marketing of the residences to begin later this year followed by opening in 2007.
The Wilder Cos. is also in pre-development for a $100 million, 440,000-square-foot lifestyle center development called The Loop in South Orlando, which will open May 19, and a $50 million, 300,000-square-foot retail development in Estero, Fla.

David Siegel will build a time-share development on 50 acres near his Westgate Lakes Resort.
By Jack Snyder | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted May 14, 2005
Time-share magnate David Siegel has bought 50 acres in south Orange County for $22.5 million for a new development near his Westgate Lakes Resort.
Design work on the new resort west of Interstate 4 will start immediately, with a construction start possible by early next year, Siegel said Friday.
Plans call for about 1,500 time-share units in several mid-rise towers of six to nine stories. About 80,000 square feet of retail space also will be developed. The 1,500-unit Westgate Lakes is almost sold out, Siegel said.
The new resort, on Big Sand Lake off Palm Parkway, hasn't been named but will carry the Westgate brand, Siegel said.

Those familiar with the Dr. Phillips area will certainly enjoy seeing this blemish gone.
Very cool! I used to work at the Gooding's Flagship on Sand Lake & Dr. Phillips as a manager (in a past life). I don't even live in Orlando anymore, but I can't express with words just how much it means to me to know that this vulgarity of a property is being destroyed.
YES!!!!

You might be interested to know that the old Gooding's store has been ripped apart to make way for what looks like smaller retail spaces. Right now most of the front facade has been demolished and interior walls are being constructed.

Thanks. This saddens my heart because this very store is where I met my wife (a customer, not a co-worker) and where I suggested she "meet me by the clock tower" at the Dr. Phillips Marketplace for a date.
Alas...

$100 million project in works for Missiles and Fire Control unit
By Christopher Boyd | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted May 27, 2005
Lockheed Martin Corp.'s Orlando Missiles and Fire Control division plans to launch this summer its first major expansion in decades, adding a new office and research building to its Sand Lake Road campus.
The new building is part of a proposed, $100 million project that would sweep away an assortment of temporary structures that the giant defense contractor has erected over two decades to accommodate a growing number of engineers. The company said construction would begin after it obtains needed permits.
Lockheed's proposed expansion comes amid increased Pentagon demand for high-tech weapons and guidance systems. As orders increased, the Missiles and Fire Control division added jobs, streamlined and modernized its production plant, and now plans to add space.
The 250,000-square-foot, six-story building would also provide workspace for MEADS International, a joint venture that includes Lockheed. MEADS, an acronym for Medium Extended Air Defense System, is developing a replacement for the Patriot and Nike Hercules guided missiles. Its 200 employees now work in temporary buildings in the Lockheed compound.

Standing in a field between the Lockheed Martin Co. plant and Orange County's new convention center annex, developer Marc Watson is laying out his vision for the 1,800 acres around him.
He sees 5,400 hotel rooms, 6,200 condos and time-shares, 2.2 million square feet of upscale shopping and a water resort, all in a setting ringed by horse pastures, a citrus grove, lakes and cypress-tree wetlands. Its name: Universal Boulevard Orlando.
To Watson, the future of the International Drive corridor lies on Universal Boulevard.

Those dopes. They'd rather develop new and let I-Drive rot instead of renovating. Tsk, tsk...

Okay, it's your money. Why would you want to renovate a rotting sector when you can build something new and spectacular in a better accessed area ?

1) Because you still have to deal with a rotting sector of abandoned and delapidated buildings and a bunch of asphalt you left behind. Not only will it look like crap (even worse than today) but it will breed crime that I will have to pay for more police and or sherrif patrol.
2) Because you have to knock down trees and cover a bunch of new land with asphalt
And you have no problem with this?
By this logic downtown Orlando shouldn't put new condos where old abandoned buildings stood, but rather just leave the old downtown to rot and try to start a new downtown elsewhere. Hey, this gives Parramore room to grow. Maybe Parramore should be abandoned too and we could clear some land and see who we could get to move there. We would also have a big rat-infested, crime-ridden CBD to be proud of.
It is my money and I wouldn't want to support a policy where whenever something gets old, you just move on, leaving a trail of asphalt and abandoned buildings in the wake.
I see why you are such a Crotty fan.

Oh, come on. That's just schoolyard taunting (with fine hyperbole, too boot).
