      14 specialty club plates

43 college and university plates

2 disabled plates

6 emergency management plates

28 military plates

36 misc. plates

5 new plates

1 sports plate

If you are counting, that is 135 different specialty plates. Way too many IMO. There was a push to reduce the number of plates but that failed last year in the legislature and they even added the 5 new plates.

I was in a county courthouse recently where they had about half of these on the wall of the County Clerk's office. It was visually just stunning to see so many various plates....some from organizations you are suprised got enough commitments to buy to qualify for a plate to begin with. Folks seem to really like all the options though, so I would be suprised to see them curtailed anytime soon.

Having lived in TN and travel thru the state often, it seems as if their program of specialty plates is quite successful.  I see a myriad of these plates on cars thru the state, so the program is marketed quite well.  I think the clerks' displays (which I have seen at the county clerks office in Johnson Co when I pay some various taxes there) help immensely.  I know here in NC when I go to the tag office (usually contracted) there are only a few of our options on display.

^ I would have to say - no. LOL ;) I can't see it ending anytime soon, since as long as folks buy the existing ones and new enthusiasts come out and support new plate iniatives the legislature is probably going to keep allowing them to be created.

Mississippi has a new tag.  Interestingly, they got rid of the magnolia in favor of the Biloxi lighthouse.  A lot of people are upset that they got rid of the magnolia, but it is a nice looking tag.

I don't know what the previous Mississippi tag looks like, but this one sure beats the new North Carolina one.

Virginia's got a "Friends Of Tibet" plate.  And what's Florida have - they have like 86,349 different ones, right?  Perhaps the line between vanity plates and specialty plates will gradually blur...  I'd love to design my own NC, get rid of that friggin 25-year-old airplane.

Alabama is getting a new main tag in January 2009.  The new tag features a beach scene and the phrase "Sweet Home Alabama" replaces  "Stars Fell on Alabama" that was on the 2002 tag.

Southron while I do love beach scenes, I don't know how fond I am of this tag to represent ALL of Bama.  The scene really only depicts the bottom half of two counties w/in the state.  However I must say I was never big fan of "The Stars" tag.

The big question is will this new tag continue to use the county numbering system w/the first two digits or will it just be generic like the latest issue of The Stars tags?  As I've stated before, I'm a huge fan of the county numbering system even if Madison County is being treated unfairly in that system.

I was born in 3 but raised in 55, you?

I believe this new tag is linked to a tourism marketing campaign emphasizing the beaches.  I do think this is an attractive plate, but I'm still not a fan.  A tag highlighting geographic features ought to at least include the mountains of north Alabama as well.

As far as I know the county numbering system will still be in place.  The last time the numbers were removed people apparently raised cain to get the numbers back, and all since have had the numbers.

I live in 3 now, formerly in 1 and 63.

Late 70s/early 80s tag with county label instead of number code

That is what I was thinking too Southron about putting the N. AL mountains in the scene along w/the beaches.  I think SC did a tag like that a few years back??

Great to hear the number codes will be used again.  My older brother is always giving me biz cards or political cards that people give him w/the number codes on them.  It does help when trying to identify a tag you aren't sure of the number (I have the hardest time w/the NW counties in AL.)

Great shot of the Dothan '77 tag.  I absolutely remember that tag (look at the bicentennial emblem/flag at the bottom right) but I don't remember at all them ditching the number code for the county label.  And you say the label was used for several years?  Just researched that and it looks like they issued tags w/the county labels like you have shown from '76 to '82 which was the first time they didn't use the county codes since '42.  Interesting to note that FL discontinued the county code system in '77, but of course has never gone back.

I have relatives in all 3 counties you've lived in, but since my family is big supporters of County 43 we rarely ventured to 63 especially since during those days the Iron Bowl was always in 1 and all our family reunions took place in 7 and 27.

I am loving Alabama's new tag on the highways!  It's almost a distraction for me.
