RIPTA seeks more money to address deficit. Facing another of its recurring budget deficits, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has asked the state legislature for nearly $9 million to help close the gap between revenue and expenses.

RIPTA retirement benefits come under scrutiny. Transit officials raised some legislators’ eyebrows when they told a House committee that their workers, mostly bus drivers and mechanics, can retire at age 52 and still collect a large part of their pensions.

Citing costs, RIPTA will reduce beach-bus runs this summer. The state transit agency’s beach bus service will be sharply cut back this summer. Rhode Island Public Transit Authority officials will discontinue the weekday runs of the buses from five communities to the South County beaches.
