The data from World Gazetteer is accurate to me, at least for the European cities. What is arguable is how some large cities are grouped (Manchester-Liverpool, Randstad, Rhein-Main, Alma...), but considering the high density of those areas, why not ?
The metropolitan areas are written in boldface. To know their composition, just click on the name, then "cities" at the top of the new page.

So, according to World-Gazetteer, the 25 top metro areas in the European Union are (millions) :

London : 13.22
Paris : 11.89
Rhine-Rhur : 11.83
Randstad : 6.59
Madrid : 6.32

Manchester-Liverpool : 5.16
Barcelona : 4.97
Milan : 4.34
Berlin : 4.05
Rome : 3.94

Athens : 3.85
Naples : 3.84
Birmingham : 3.78
Hamburg : 3.26
Rhine-Main (Franckfurt) : 3.14

Lisbon : 2.64
Budapest : 2.57
Katowice : 2.54
Copenhagen-Malmö : 2.39
Stuttgart : 2.33

Munich : 2.31
Warsaw : 2.26
Alma (Aachen-Liège-Maastricht) : 2.23
Brussels : 2.20
Bucharest : 2.18

Is there Metro stats available?

I guess I was surprised to see the limited amount of cities w/ 1M plus populations. As you mention, it may be skewed due to metro populations.
I'd be interested to compare and also see newer figures.

I get into the Naples port early in the morning. I am generally familiar with the area as I have stayed in Sorrento, Capri, etc. I really hate to spend great amounts of money on ship excursions when I usually do things on my own and see more. Anyone have any suggestions on getting around the area cheaper. My wife hasn't seen anything in this part of Italy so I would like to go back to Pompei, Vesuvius, etc. Any helpful ideas.

A couple of years, someone in Stockholm gave me the bus route and suggestions for his city. It was the best trip I have had without going with other tourists.

I was standing at a bus stop in front of the City of Arts and Sciences. the first pic is of the same complex.

the building itself in the pic is the base of the Arbor. It was closed so I did not get to walk through it, but really, I saw everything else, so I have a hard time beleiving I missed much in the flora and fauna department.

If you ever get there. go the the Aquarium.
Its the largest in Europe and it really is amazing.

Good to see that so many people have information about Germany. I got a job offer for Berlin, beginning March 09 and I would like to gather as many information as possible. My biggest problem is the search for a flat. I tried my best on the web but all I could find about Berlin property is this and that wasn't very satisfying. Does anyone know if the real estate market in Germany has the same problem as the US market? Thank you very much in advance for your responses.

I am not exactly sure how this one will look on the street scape side. Generally a hotel in a place like that would usually be built to the highest standards, but it looks a bit bland and forboding.

the other one. I like the idea. wait, I love the idea of modern towers rising behind historic structures. this not only preserves history and keeps the street pedestrian, but it adds density and function to the area. Generally Hotels are a good development for cities. They provide decent jobs for many people, they help support the near by pubs and eateries. they do not put stress on school systems or even much road traffic.

I hope the best for your town. These projects both seem like an positive indication for your town.

There's nothing on the sites at the moment, at least nothing of importance. On the picture below you can see the locations of the proposed buildings (both are to be hotels, run by different chains). Building 1 will be built in what is now part of a parking lot by the harbor area, next to a lower but modern-style building. Building 2 will be built behind a more historic building, a popular hotel in town. It's actually that hotel's idea to expand their hotel by building this new taller building in their own courtyard and somehow merging them together.

Greece is really incredible! I've been too a number of places there, including:

Parthas
Arrahova
Olympia
Delphi
Tolo
Corinth
Patmos
Epidauros
Mycenae
Athens
Mykonos
Crete
Rhodes
Santorini

If anyone ever goes through the Isles, Rhodes City is a must see! It is the largest city left in Europe with its Medieval architecture still completely intact. When you approach Rhodes, you are met by its huge city walls and enter the city through the city through one of the city gates. The streets are all narrow and paved with cobblestones and there are actually people live there, giving it lots of life. Just outside the city walls is the modern section of Rhodes. Rhodes is the capital of it's prefacture and has a population around 70,000. The island as a whole accounts for around 10% of Greece's population. Needless to say I've fallen completely in love in with country and have been eyeing companies that have operations there so I can relocate to there, preferably Athens or Rhodes.

Hard to believe that this photo was taken in December! I think this is the eastern part of Cannes before La Croisette Cape. The hills rise just behind the buildings, at right is the neighbourhood called La Californie.
La Croisette Beach is very select, a friend tell me she saw women sunbathing there with their jewels! Or it was at Bijou Plage (Jewel Beach), situated at the point of La Croisette Cape ?
Beyond those hills is Super Cannes and, further, the city of Vallauris famous for its ceramics, a city where Jean Marais a major French actor and Picasso lived.

I was there just after you.

I went to Santorini, and its true the Island is great, the views incredible volcano bla bla bla, but I hate American tourists, and Santorini had far too may of them. I think there were 7 cruise ships there one night.

Archipelligo is a great resturant if you go however.

I liked Naxos the most of every place I went. The island was more "real" and still had enough tourist contact to be comfortable fun easy to navigate etc. I suggest attending the cultural show in the castro that is put on every weekend night(all you can drink for 15 euros)

and stay at Astir of naxos. just the right distance away from the city so its quiet, but close enough you are always close. (super easy safe walk along beach 5 minutes)

Mykonos was very nice and we had a great hotel there. I acoided all the super touristy stuff like paradise beach. There is a beach like that in my home town that I used to lifeguard and I really have no interest in that kind of debauchery on my honeymoon. But if you are single... and you are not from the Hamptons or Miami beach get your freak on.

It's sounds like a city-journey because the winter is indeed not the best season to dive around the Golden Islands, only Menton is never freezing.
All those cities you mention can be reached with the TGV, also Nîmes, the "French Rome". The fact is that a lot of sites around the cities are worth visiting and I don't know which are your tastes, and there are tons of museums, particularly on the Riviera.
Between Nîmes and Avignon is the Pont du Gard, between Avignon and Arles stand the amazing dead-town of Les Baux. This December, there is the 50th international Santons fair in Arles (in three places : Saint-Trophime Cloister, Ste-Anne Chapel and Eglise des Trinitaires). Marseille is just a great working site at the moment and the Longchamp Palace (musée des Beaux-Arts) is closed. Among the perched villages on the riviera, the most famous is Eze. You may visit Vallauris near Cannes. The weather is sunny in Provence these days. Have a nice trip !

According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK population is projected to reach 71,100,000 in 2031. Many newspapers deal with this subject, wondering about the evolution of the UK society and how to answer effectively to the fastest demographic growth since the baby boom. Read for instance the (rather pessimistic) article "record immigration sees UK population soar" from The Daily Telegraph where you also can download (pdf) the "ONS report on national population projections".

What happened in Dresden was a crime. What happened to most of Germany was a war crime.
If Britian wishes to look civil at all, they should apologize for the useless slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people! I think that England should be paying for these reconstructions, or atleast apologize! The fact that people took pride such as in that newspaper for killing people is disgusting!
That night, those English bombers fell to the same level as the Nazis themselves.

I prefer to eat the street food over the restaurants. There is an endless variety, it's authentic (non-chain), and relatively cheap. The exchange rate on the pound vs the dollar is pretty bad so if you are on a budget this will help. I would stay away from the places that sell "fish & chips".

London is not a warm city so dress for relatively cool to cold weather.
Ive decided to travel abroad for the first time. The city Ive decided to go to is London. I will be going at the begining of April 2008. I will be there for about four days. I already know what attractions I want to see. I do have two questions for anyone who has ever been to London. 1. What and where should I eat? Ive read that dining options there have become very diverse but with so many choices I don't know where to go and what to try. 2. What is the weather like in April? All the travelguides I read don't give me a clear answer on this.

DelGreco, on Apr 28 2007, 08:46 AM, said:

I agree that Turkey is beautiful and has a lot of culture. But if you studied some History (we Medittereneans/Europeans know history), you will realize that Turkey is ancient, midevil, and rennaissance Greece! Istanbul is really Contantinople, the most symbolic city of Chiristianity. Most of the cities around the Bosporous used to have greek names, but were eventually changed. St. Sophia is the oldest and most symbolic christian church in the heart of the city. Of course they want to convert it to a mosque as well.

Athens may be boring architecturally, because it was under Turkish occupation from 1421 to 1821 (400 yrs). Needless to say, they raped, destroyed, and burned everything architecturally significant. However, the Greek architectural elements, in what is todays Modern Turkey, still stands as a reminder of the past. Eventually the Turks were ousted from what is today Modern Greece, but the country was left in ruins. During the following 150 yrs, 1821-1970, Greece underwent a period of deep poverty, unemployment, and 2 World Wars. Even more poverty and ruins ensued. Turkey sided with the Germans of course and did not get affected. Most of those concrete buildings in Athens and in most sizeable Greek cities, were all built during the 60's and 70's. During to economic hardship, a law was passed that allowed homeowners to knock down their architecturally significant homes. so they can build 4-6 story buildings. Usually each floor was given to each of their children. That's why homeownership is Greece is high, despite their low incomes.

The only thing still standing is the Acropolis and the greek symbol, the Parthenon, which was also partially ruined by the Turks who used it as an explosive storage facility. Amazing!

Greece may not have much architecture, but they have culture and spirit! They enjoy life, they sing, they dance, and anyone who goes to Greece, comes back with a better appreciation and positive outlook on life! The Turks and the muslim culture could never take that away from them or come close to blending with the rest of europe. This is why Turkey will never become a member of the European Union. Human rights are far from western standards.

Plus Greece has the thousands of miles of beaches and thousands of beautiful Greek Isles. I am sure the Turks now regret not taking those too!

Sorry for the history lesson, but it kinds explains the boring Urbanism in Athens.

Don't mistake my comments on Athens for the entire country of Greece. The old city (Plaka) is a fascinating place- its just a very very small part of modern day Athens. Even in its heyday however many thousands of years ago, there was only so much population that could be supported by the agricultural systems at the time, so the cities remained small. That only changed in the 19th century when modern mass-agricultural practices changed and allowed more people to be supported on a give piece of land than ever before. Thats why Athens is as large as it is today, and why we have huge cities in places where they wouldn't have been possible before (Dubai, UAE for example).

I think Turkey will be admitted someday. They have a lot of improvements to make first, though.
