Urban Planet's newest feature is the Project Database. This will replace the former wiki system that we were trying to develop. This system is editable by members, and we need you to help get it going. I have several in the Spartanburg section if you want to see examples of what this can be over time. You may have already noticed the link at the top of the Charleston forum.

Please let me know if you have any questions, thoughts, or comments on it.

Noisette Project

John Knott and Noisette actually brought this idea to N. Charleston to kick this whole thing off and there has been a comedy of errors on many fronts that I believe will ultimately doom this project (at least as it is currently conceived). However, talking to Mayor Summey, he seems relatively confident that they can find another developer to pick up this project. But the biggest problem facing this project right now is the rail line that is about to dissect the site.

They need to build a new interchange at Jedburg Road NOW before they do any more development up there. It is a nightmare of an exit, if you've ever had the pleasure of experiencing it.

TBC Corporation is the largest marketer of replacement and private brand tires in the US. They are the parent company of stores like Tire Kingdom. The site is right there near that interchange, where all that new distribution space is being built by the Rockefeller Development Corporation. I've heard that the Jedburg exit will be upgraded, not sure when though.

Between this, the Maersk deal, and Boeing, this has really been a good couple of weeks for Charleston' economy (and South Carolina too).

That's good news. I still don't understand why IMAX didn't work downtown with the tourists there, but it's good that IMAX is back in Charleston.

I voiced my displeasure in the selection of Knott as a development partner for this property over 3 years ago and I still stand by that. Hopefully they will still get something out of this but it was a bad partnership from the beginning.

According to an aeronautics spokesman, it is extremely wishful thinking to expect a lot of spin-off jobs to locate in SC to supply Boeing. I guess time will tell. At the end of the day it might just end up being a story about 4,000 sorely needed jobs.

Not only that, but it takes more than assembly line workers to make planes. Engineers, physicists and tons of other higher paying jobs could be generated from this.

Krezee - Of course it's better to make 26/hr instead of 14/hr, even if we assume it's the same job in WA as it is in SC. But, market forces then determine that 26/hr in WA is more than one needs to pay for the job and the next thing you know the employer is putting new jobs in SC. Maybe later, the existing WA jobs will come here too. That's the problem with Unions, they try to defy market forces by monopolizing labor. However, there are other options - as this case demonstrates well.

And, like someone else said, not everyone is making 14/hr. But, I assume the 14/hr is starting pay. That's about 30K/yr, with health benefits I'm sure. For a HS or 2yr degree that's a pretty good wage. I made less than half that with my high GPA BA degree in 1995!

Yes , I was quite relieved to see that news plus the Boeing plant confirmation. While Boeing won't be exporting by sea, they may import some parts / materials. The main thing is that it's just good for the area to have another real industry, one of America's premier companies as the matter of fact.

OK, maybe I didn't read it right. I was taking it to mean that the $14 hourly workers were doing the same sort of work as the contract workers, but obviously not.

And this is very, very, VERY good news for Charleston!!!!!! Hopefully this means more training programs will be taking place so that so many contract workers won't need to be imported in the first place.
