I mean like not the most awesome part of town ever but okay enough that I don't have to worry about my children and where they can get a good education???
The Usual - Fort Worth - Near Southside

The Usual is a new place opening on Magnolia Avenue in Fort Worth's Near Southside urban district (just south of Downtown), which has become the hotbed of Fort Worth's indie urban movement. The brainchild of Brad Hensarling (owner of The Chat Room bar a few blocks to the east), The Usual takes an interesting focus: it's Prohibition-era cocktails in a smoke-free environment.

In the works for two years, The Usual is finally about to open. The photos on Fort Worthology were taken just before the staining of the concrete floors. All of the furniture was not in place, nor was the patio complete.

The design of The Usual comes from the mind of designer Kara Keith, and the project was built by contractor Bill Smith. It has an awesome modern style with a mid-century feel, of the sort that's never really been seen in Fort Worth before. It reminds me of places I saw in Portland, especially the Doug Fir Lounge.

The Usual will have a cocktail menu of around 28 drinks at launch, expanding to over 100 as things progress.

Festival lighting in place between the two loft buildings. The lights run between the two buildings for the length of the street, except in the center of the block. There, the buildings set back a bit, creating a sizable plaza space. Leaving the plaza area open overhead gives a kind of “tension and release” feel to the development’s streetscape, with a more cozy sensation between the building walls under the lights opening up to a larger central “room.” It’s a nice, subtle piece of spatial definition.

Texarkana, Tyler or Longview?

I've not been to Tyler in quite a long time, so I definitely don''t want to claim "expert status" on that city. But in reference to the other two, I know enough...

Texarkana... it's slowly becoming much more than the "bi-state rest stop" of the past. I went to college about an hour away from there in Arkadelphia, Arkansas and so I have a lot of friends from the area, and spent a fair amount of time there. The near completion of the full loop is pretty awesome, and I'm quite proud of how well the twin cities are cooperating to improve their infrastucture. It shouldn't just stop at I-30 though; hopefully a northern portion will be built with something that connects into US 71 towards Ashdown on the AR side, and OK on the Texas side (I-69 plans perhaps?). Aside from the roads, the biggest news is how awesome the job market is there... people are really starting to MOVE to Texarkana for decent work! My favorite project is the massive expansion of TAMU Texarkana, b/c this region NEEDS a powerhouse university, especially considering that the closest comprehensive schools (public) are 75 miles away!!

Longview... I've got a lot of love for this little Texas city. Beautiful setting in the east Texas woods, and lots of great people. Longview's growth is spurred by it's excellent location between Tyler and Shreveport also, and as the city continues to peel off industries that are unique from Shreveport's, it will keep growing from that metro's support. Again, another decent-sized university would spur Longview's development, but UT Tyler is serving as a great outlet for the Longview area.

I think I'd have to go with Texarkana (b/c it's twice as nice LOL), but I reserve my final opinion until I've gotten a chance to visit Tyler again.

Yeah I'm proud of Texarkana as well. Have lived here most of my life and it has blossomed from being a small town to a small city. Plans are already moving forward to building the north loop from I-30 to U.S. Hwy 71 and I-69 is still in the planning stages. Work on the university is coming along nicely. It's in the second stage of construction which is the multipurpose library and school of engineering buildings. The last phase to be built will be the dorms. The school officially opens fall 2010. Once finished it will have the capacity to accomodate up to 10,000 students. The new frontage road and interchange projects are making major headway and will be completed in two years. Lots of new businesses and jobs have come into the city since you were last here. The area around the I-30 freeway is almost unrecognizable with all the new buildings going up. You should come back for a visit. You'd be surprised at how it's changed!

I just got from Dallas and I was SO impressed. I stayed at the Hilton Anatole and it was beautiful, great service. My conference was at the Sheraton, that was also very nice. My taxi cab drivers were all very kind. The city is kept really clean, at least the places I visited. I went to eat at the House of Blues, Cadillac Bar, Avanti, and more... all my meals were scrumptious! AND that Wells Fargo Building in the first post? I was very uneasy at first, but i now LOVE that building. When you take a really good look at it, it's really unique.. All in all my dallas experience was awesome.

CAPITAL METRO
Rail opening on indefinite hold
Further rule violations, system glitches cause delay. Agency accused of making 'scapegoat' of contractor

By Ben Wear
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Saturday, March 21, 2009

Capital Metro said Friday that it is indefinitely delaying the opening of its Leander-to-downtown-Austin rail service in the wake of further allegations of federal safety violations and because of continued technical problems.

In addition, the transit agency called on Veolia Transportation, its rail operations contractor, to fire its local safety director. Capital Metro is bringing in rail officials from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which has a dozen commuter rail lines in the greater Boston area, "to assist with startup operations and safety implementation."

Festivities to celebrate the opening that were scheduled for next weekend at all nine rail stations have been canceled. They were to include short demonstration rides for the public.

The opening, which has been pushed back several times, now has no target day.

"By May 15, Capital Metro will report back to the community with the status of the project and an action plan," an agency news release said.

A week ago, the Federal Railroad Administration began an investigation into a February incident in which two Veolia train engineers drove their MetroRail trains into a section of track without getting proper clearance. According to Capital Metro rail operations director Bill Le Jeune, they realized their error after a third of a mile, stopped, got proper clearance and then moved on. The violations could result in federal and state fines for Veolia.

Capital Metro then decided to delay the March 30 rail opening by as much as a month but said opening events set for March 27 and March 28 would proceed. But on Thursday, according to Le Jeune, the railroad administration accused Veolia of seven violations, alleging irregularities related to"efficiency testing" and poor documentation of hearing and vision tests on workers. On Friday, Capital Metro, which is still trying to fix a problem with signal crossing gates that in some cases don't come down quickly enough, applied the brakes to the project.

Those efficiency tests, Le Jeune said, involve testing workers on rules and procedures. Veolia, he said, had not done all required testing.

Veolia officials noted that the company is the majority owner of the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co., the passenger rail operator for the Boston transit agency that Capital Metro is bringing in to help.

"That's ironic because we run that system," said Ron Hartman, executive vice president for rail with Veolia. Veolia's five-year contract there was recently extended three years.

Hartman said Veolia disputes the allegation that its efficiency testing was inadequate and will make that case to federal regulators. He said that the hearing and vision tests had been done and that documents supporting that will be filed immediately.

Hartman also said that the replacement of the safety director was already under way and that Capital Metro was told that about two weeks ago.

Trinity Terrace, who wrapped construction of their new City Tower last year, has had so much success in attracting residents to that building that they've announced a new third tower, their tallest yet. River Tower will be 20 stories in all, with a height of 238 feet. The new tower will be built on the northwest corner of the Trinity Terrace block bounded by Texas, 10th, Penn, and Fournier streets, in Downtown Fort Worth's Upper West Side overlooking the Trinity River. It will go up alongside the original, much older Trinity Terrace tower. It was designed by Portland firm Ankrom Moisan, who also designed City Tower.

Here are some models and renderings, including some views of the completed three-tower block:
