I agree, but tell that the folks down in NK. Representative Sheehan is outspoken about port development as well. What I don't get is that Quonset isn't really next to lots of residential. Sure there is some, but the port sticks out on a small peninsula - I just don't understand the nimbyism about the port down there.

For the record, after about 2 years of harping on this topic to any and all official or semi-official types, a microscopic fraction of state and muni people are getting the message that measuring W2s exclusively is giving them a distorted view of the RI economy.

Case in point, at yesterday's Creative Providence forum, Lynne McCormack - head of Prov's Arts, Culture and Tourism dept - in reference to the 2006 study showing that the arts/creative sector contributed $120MM+ to the RI economy said, "And that's just W2s. It doesn't include 1099s."

This after my stunt at the last CP forum where I demonstrated, by a show of hands, that more than half of the actual artist/creatives file 1099s, not W2.

Looks like RI's FM Global is looking to make a move on one of our historic corporations. Hopefully this will not affect Hartford in any adverse way.

Finally came across some solid numbers about self-employment, and it turns out I was grossly underestimating how big the 1099 sector might be. From an article in City Journal.

In New York City, one of the few municipalities that tracks self-employment carefully, there were 807,750 self-employed workers in 2006, according to new numbers from the comptroller

TEXTRON is a rumored acquisition target.

The suitor is apparently is an Arab company

In the articles that mention the Arab company United Technologies of hartford and Boeing of Washington are also mentioned as firms that might even counter the offer.

Textron says they do not counter on rumors, but many people are not at all suprised by sale rumors since the company apparently is a bit of a hodge podge, and does not really create any synergies on its own

Obviously it would be best if this were not sold to a forerign company, but this could hurt providence

I don't even have a take on this yet, because it's kind of stunning. Pending special legislation, the Don has asked for the resignations of the entire board of directors of the EDC. This follows the recommendation of an advisory report he asked for. The PBN story has the full report as a downloadable .DOC file.

Another recommendation being enacted immediately is a national search for a new executive director for EDC.

I posted my take on the New Commons blog. In a word, meh.

I see great potential for transformational changes, but the report reeks of same-old-same-old. No mention of creative sector, no mention of freelancers/1099 economy, and a distinct sense that the advisory panel is not well-connected to the arts/design/entertainment sector. Like, clueless.

Also, the notion of public education is mentioned exactly once and in a marginal context.

I give them a solid C for this report. Overall grade could go to A or to F, depending on:

  1. quality and BREADTH of the director search committee

  2. smartness of the director job description

  3. quality and WITH-IT-NESS of the director

We need more condos like we need a hole in the head. High end condos are going to bring in high player$ that are going to work and play in Boston, simple as that.

We need an economic climate that is more competative with Boston. More competative corperate tax, more competative infrastructure to serve larger corperations. Not just more condos.

On a related note, we picked someone returning from SoCal and were discussing the what would be the opposite of the verb "to de-plane". Would it be "to plane" or "to en-plane"? This being Rhode Island, we decided it could only be "to com-plane".
