What was your favorite tall building proposal that never happened?

My question to everyone is would you rather have the 750 foot Signature Tower design at 505 Church...or the 750 foot 505CST current bldg. design?

I think I would have to go with the current 505CST design because I believe the entire building will be up to 750 feet, without a spire, which should give it a considerable presence in DT amongst the other structures.

I really loved the look of Siggy, but I'm pretty sure the 750" height would have been including the really tall spire...which had to be at least 100-150"...right?

I'd go with the 505. Although I'm not averse to the 1,000+ ft. Sig going on the Hotel Tulane site. :yahoo:

505 CST all the way.

Check this out. If we in Nashville think we had a lot of cancelled projects, here are 54 cancelled projects for Atlanta!

Go to ATlanta, and then choose diagrams for cancelled projects only. They have 54!

Was the Nashville Tower an actual proposal for the city? They have it listed as fantasy for Nashville. Can people just make their own diagrams for cities, or did a developer actually propose this at one time.

I think it's gorgeous, especially from the street level, it addresses its sloped street frontage very gracefully and it pulls your gaze up, if you stand at the corner across from it you can literally see the people walking along look up as it comes into view.

I just don't get this attitude that everything should look new.  We're a city, not a suburban office park.

Couldn't agree more.  The most interesting cities usually seem to have higher levels of architectural diversity as well.  Give me a cityscape like Nashville's over one with nothing but shiny glass boxes any day of the week.

I understand if L&C doesn't hit all the notes for someone from a design standpoint, but that doesn't mean you can't also appreciate and respect it's architectural significance.  Obviously the concept of beauty is subjective, and that extends to all forms of art as well.  But how one could go so far as to say that L&C is 'a turd that should be demolished' though just dumbfounds me.

I don't recall that one, so probably just fantasy. Frankly, it looks like a gigantified L&C Tower clad in blue glass.

Put me in the camp of someone who loves the L&C. I think it's one of the best buildings in the city. I remember as a child seeing the letters change color in inclimate weather. I always thought that was so cool. The way it addresses the corner at the street level is truly fantastic. Something that no other building in Nashville has yet to top.

This one is not listed. It was rendered in 1975 and was to be 750 feet tall looking like the space needle in Seattle.

That is where Donald Trump will build his tower....seriously. Rumored had it he was looking at Nashville, and this was the site.

I've been out of town for a week, but wanted to respond..

It was 22 stories I think? This was the one Gov. Lamar Alexander and Anne Roberts stopped from happening. The front page of the USA Today read: "Governor and Historic Commission stop tower..." This made national news, and since then all we have is a surface parking lot.

Just a few:

The above mentioned Riverview Tower 22 stories and 300+ feet

After the project was denied by the city, the existing building burned down soon after under unexplained circumstances. They owners were still denied permission to build. There may have been more to this behind the scenes than what we knew at the time.

The Cumberland (The original proposal by Joe Rogers) 19 stories 300+ feet by developer Joe Rogers. Would have taken down what is now the Marriott Courtyard.

It was to be 326' tall and I know because I had the plans on my desk when I worked for an Engineering firm. It was going to be one ugly -a#* building (think of a blue and white Parkway Towers with a gabled roof). I'm so thankful they didn't replace Nashville's ' first skyscraper' with that monstrosity.

The Tower at the post office. 19 stories on top of the old post office which is now the Frist Center for the Arts.

There is a good rendering in the Frist Museum. It would have been a glorious addition to the skyline, but the current building is beautiful on the inside. It's not too shabby on the outside either.

WES  20  and 25 stories varying heights depending on what rendering was published. No comment.

Would like to have seen this one come about. Maybe something better will be proposed someday.

University Towers 1 and 2  20 and 28 stories where the Adelicia now stands.

They would have been bland, generic and cheap apartments for Vandy students. I like the Adelicia and the soon to start Buckingham much better.

The tower at 19th and West End. a 30 story tower where the Arby's is on West End.

Never heard of this one.

The American Center on 31st and West End was at one time a 24 story proposal, but because of the neighborhood suing, it became two 12 story buildings instead.

Another one that crossed my desk. One of the twelve story buildings had already been built when the 24 story building was proposed.

Also, there was a 40 story hotel proposed for the TPAC site. A greenish glass L-shaped building.
