East Side Neighborhoods of Detroit: Part One - Ind

Detroit's East Side is known for its many decayed and downtrodden neighborhoods, however in the midst of the blight lies several neighborhoods built primarily in the early 1900's that were once home to many of Detroit's wealthy elite. The most exclusive of these neighborhoods is Indian Village.

Indian Village is only three blocks wide, but stretches over a mile from Jefferson Ave to Mack Ave. It was named Indian Village because two of the streets that run through the neighborhood (Seminole and Iroquois) are named after Indian tribes. It is one of many neighborhoods in Detroit that are listed as a National Historic Neighborhood.

Anyway, here are pics of just a few of the hundreds of homes that make up this neighborhood.

No these are actually cardboard cutouts erected to hide the blight and decay from Superbowl patrons.

Great pics. I find the scene around Indian Village very strange. I remember first driving, not to far from my wife's old hood, down Fischer, where its real gritty then going over a block and its like.....what the hell just happened? The have and the have nots, living together so close. Especially considering Indian Village isn't waterfront or within walking distance of downtown.

Those are some great houses. It is too bad Detroit gets such a bad rap - the photos I have seen on here really make me want to visit (in the summer).
