Nashville International Airport Development thread

NB...no hard feelings towards Memphis and it's airport...but know this...I've lived in both Memphis and Nashville, and I've found that it's hard to have a conversation with a Memphian when the topic of Nashville comes up. Seems that our brothers in Memphis either see us as competition or just outright hate Nashvillians.

By the way...your comment about our "automobile plants", as if that's all we have, is misguided. The Nashville area DOES have 2 automobile plants that employ more than 10,000 people...we're one of the largest book publishing headquarters in the world...we're one of the top 3 music headquarters in the world...one of the largest healthcare centers in the US...and we're about to have the tallest skyscraper outside of New York and Chicago.

Oh...and we're the largest metropolitan area in Tennessee.

I thought this was settled, but ok...

I really don't know what Memphians you talk to, because about 50-60% of Memphians and residents of the Memphis MSA downright hate Memphis and love Nashville. I see it the other way around. Not all...I'll say it again...NOT ALL NASHVILLIANS HATE MEMPHIS...however, I notice that in my experience, there are more Nashvillians ready to hammer Memphis than there are Memphians ready to do the same to Nashville. As far as airports, I and just about everyone here doesn't really view Nashville as competition. I'm sorry, but that is the way it is. We have the largest cargo airport in the world. It generates $20.7 billion and then on top of that is responsible for 166,000 jobs. I'm just mentioning that right now, for a city that sure loves to claim that it is the number one thing in Tennessee, the economic powerhouse that it is known for (the two car factories that "employ more than 10,000 people") certainly pales in comparison to the second-largest MSA in the state.

As far as music, I'd check out Memphis...in case you haven't noticed, several labels are relocating to Memphis along with the film industry. Memphis is also one of the largest medical centers in the US and continues to grow with the biotech field. Also, I really wouldn't use a skyscraper as something of merit for a city. Memphis is going in a different route than up...it's going for street level appeal that most on the UP forums agree is more important than a big tower rising up. Cities that are much more important than New York and Chicago have less impressive skylines but much more economic importance.

Ah, and if Memphis took the Nashville route and tacked on the entire region it is situated in to its MSA, Memphis would have the largest MSA in the state...but I guess we'll have to just settle for two of the fastest growing counties in the nation.

I'll start by saying that I was born in Memphis (Methodist hospital). Half of my family still lives there and they are part of the "50-60%" that doesn't particularly like it. Just food for thought, but if you contend that over half of your MSA hates the MSA that they live in, I think there might be something very wrong there.

Can't we all just get along??? I don't know why this has to turn into a Nashville vs Memphis argument. We are talking about two great cities that are both, obviously, getting even greater as we speak.... and the best part of all... they are both in the state of Tennessee! The tremendous growth in this state will be beneficial to all... whether it takes place in West, Middle, or East. I say we should all be happy for one another... instead of fighting amongst ourselves.

I agree. I love Nashville. I love Memphis. I love Franklin. I love Tennessee! It's a great state with great cities, each having the goods and bads. Nashville has cars. Memphis has planes. Nashville has health care. Memphis has biotech. Nashville has music. And, oh wait, so does Memphis! They're both great cities who are getting better, and still have a lot more they can accomplish. Isn't that something we can agree on?

Oh, and by the way. I posted a reply in a thread about America's friendliest city, and trying not to be a homer (I should have.) I thought, what other city could I say that would kind of relate to where I live? And after about a half a second of thinking, I said Memphis. I was wondering, I've never been there (I need to.), and I really don't know if people are friendly. I assume they are, but don't know. Are y'all friendly?

The reason I respond is because this is the NASHVILLE forum...not the MEMPHIS forum. NB has brought his stuff over here, not the other way around.

I am happy to be a Nashvillian. I love Nashville. I am a homer.

I would love to see some type of proof that Memphis airport employs 166,000 people. You may be right, but that's an unreal number of people.

First of all...Fed Ex employs about 34,000 people. I'm sure there are quite a few others employed at MEM, but 166,000 still seems awful steep.

As far as music...it's not even close.

As for 2 of the fastest growing counties...Nashville has 2 of the fastest growing counties in the country as well...Williamson and Rutherford.

As for MSA's...Memphis counts 8 counties in its MSA with a population of 1.26 million as of 2005.

Memphis MSA 1,007,304 1,135,614 1,261,492 25.2%

Tate, MS 21,431 25,370 26,167 22.1%

Marshall, MS 30,361 34,993 35,935 18.4%

Nashville MSA...1.34 million...oh...only 8 counties included...just like MEMPHIS

Nashville was named one of the 15 best U.S. cities for work and family by Fortune magazine.

Nashville ranks as the fifth most popular U.S. city for corporate relocations, by Expansion Management magazine.

Forbes magazine named Nashville as one of the 25 cities that are likely to have the country's highest job growth over the coming five years.

Hospitality Industry

54,890 jobs are directly related to hospitality.

Nashville hosted more than 10 million visitors in 1999 resulting in over $2.7 billion in revenues for the city.

Nashville has 32,699 hotel rooms in the city.

Opryland Hotel is now the largest non-gaming hotel property in the United States, with 2,884 rooms and 288,000 square feet of exhibit space. Nashville's Convention Center features 118,675 square foot of exhibit space.

Transportation

16 airlines: AirCanada, American, American Connection, American Eagle, Comair, Continental, Delta, Frontier, Independence, Northwest, RegionsAir, Skyway, Southwest, United Express, US Airways, US Airways Express.

More than 392 daily airport arrivals and departures.

Convergence of three interstate highways, I-40, I-24 and I-65. I-440, an inner beltway now exists, and I-840, an outer beltway between I-40 and I-24 and I-24 and I-65, was recently completed.

Nashville Trolley Company services the downtown and the Music Valley Drive/Opryland Hotel area.

Cost of Living

Nashville consistently ranks among the lowest for cost-of-living in comparable cities across the nation.

Overall cost of living is only 93.7% of the national average (100%).

All components (groceries, housing, utilities, etc.) of cost of living are typically below the national average.

Now...I'll admit I don't know a whole bunch about Memphis...other than I didn't care much for it when I lived there 15 years ago...but...I'm sure things change.

You might need to admit the same about Nashville. There's a reason why so many companies are moving their HQ's here.

Oh...and not everyone on UP is all about "human scale" buildings only. I believe if Memphis was getting a 1000 foot tower, you'd be touting it as a neat thing.

Come see our new symphony hall. The Frist Museum. The Country Music Hall of Fame. LP Field, home of the Titans. The GEC, home of the Predators. The world famous Ryman Auditorium. The world famous Grand Ole Opry. World Famous Music Row. World Famous Bluebird Cafe. World Famous Tootsie's Orchid Lounge. The list goes on.

I realize Memphis has some really cool stuff as well. Just don't dismiss your brother up I-40 as some hicktown.

As far as airports...I'm not sure any Nashvillians would truly see MEM as competition to BNA. BNA will grow, and I'm sure MEM will grow. No one on here that I know of has said that BNA is a better airport, or that MEM is going to falter. Yes...there's speculation about everything from NWA falling apart to BNA becoming a hub for Frontier, but it's mostly just that...speculation.

Best of luck to you guys in Memphis. I'm sure you are proud of what you have, and wouldn't trade it for what we have here. Of course...the feeling is mutual.

Amanda, what you posted about Southwest and Memphis is right on the money to what I have heard. Who knows, only time will tell eh?

Either way with the Embraer as they have a fairly large maintenance facility at the airport here. So IF Southwest was to go with them, it would be a two fold benefit for the airport to some degree.

But the BNA Airport Operations Manager has personally told me that between 90-95% of Southwest flights that arrive and/or leave here are booked solid. I would think that he would know given the fact that he oversees all airline, airplane, and airport operations. Nashville is also a connecting point for Southwest, so that figures into the equation too for booked flights.

I flew out of Nashville consistently (for free :yahoo:, $25 dollars for first class :yahoo: ) and I have noticed more activity on the SWA side. I remember looking out and seeing one of the planes with the Killer Whale livery and saying to myself, the plane really looks like a whale.

Back to the topic. They actually have three of those jets painted up in that livery (Shamu-Sea World). At one point, there was three of them on the ramp at Nashville at the same time, but that was back in the winter. A funny sight to see no less! LOL!!!

They have a bunch of "themed" aircraft that are flying about the US. And word is more are on the way.

You overlooked the two biggest... Caremark RX and HCA. Plus, Community Health will be a Fortune 500 company by next year.

Also, Ingram Industries, headquartered in Nashville, may be the largest privately owned corporation in the US. Annual sales are estimated to be in excess $20 Billion. If public, it would appear very high on the Fortune 500 list, possibly even in the Fortune 100.

I'm going to post this in here. It is a list of every passenger flight in Nashville and who flies them. It has a margin of error, so don't refernce it unless it is a stated operation.

BTW, All Southwest needs is feeder airlines and its at hub status here in Nashville easily.

Titanhog, you say Memphis MSA has 1.26 mil compared to Nashville MSA's 1.34 mil. Where did you get that information? Emporis shows Nashville at 1.485 mil and Memphis at 1.260 mil. That's the same for Memphis with Nashville significantly higher (225,000 more than Memphis MSA). Emporis seems a little more accurate :)

I think at present, BNA is better primed for future passenger growth simply based on the airport expansions and growth in this area. Now, I might not have said the same thing about BNA in 1997 after AA left, so who knows what the future holds. But right now, things look good!

As for cargo, there's no way Nashville will ever come close to Memphis' numbers unless an earthquake destroys Memphis and FedEx moves to Nashville. Do you Memphis folks know that FedEx ground is based here? I think they employ about 200,000 people!

I looked at all kinds of sites for Nashville MSA...I got Memphis' from their own CofC. The 1.34 was one I saw twice. I know I've heard it's closer to 1.5.

Didn't know that about FedEx Ground. You saying that its HQ is in Nashville?

Link to comment

yeah, the FedEx ground hub is on the north side of town off briley pkwy. I don't know if "HQ" is official, since it's simply a division of fedex.

Just curious, how much bigger is FedEx than UPS? You never hear about all the cargo out of ATL from UPS. Of course, that could be that ATL has many legs to stand on, not just cargo.

Link to comment

Too lazy to do research, but I'm pretty sure that UPS is about a third again larger than FEDEX. However, FDX's air business is bigger. Could be wrong, but I believe Louisville, KY serves as the largest UPS air facility. UPS is still king in ground delivery.

The 8-county MSA for Nashville in 2006 was estimated by the TN ECD to be 1.430 million. With the additional 5 counties in the CSA, it's 1.55 million.

Great list, Lexy. Here's the same list sorted alphabetically by destination. This way it's pretty easy to determine that they are non-stop flights to 58 different cities out of Nashville. I had no idea there were flights to two cities in Hawaii. I hope someone from Memphis has similar information for their airport for comparative purposes.

So these lists make me curious. Back when I lived in Nashville in 88-92, American Airlines had their hub. I recall they had 300 some daily flights out of BNA. If I'm correct about that. Anyway, does anyone have the number of flights out of BNA at the peak when the AA hub was there. How does that compare to the number of flights now? I realize that there are differences in the types of planes that are flown now vs. the larger planes AA flew (I think lots of 727s and MD80s).

The sheer number of operations out of BNA for AA is nowhere close to what it was. Used to be the only jets on the ramps and runways was AA, but thankfully that has changed. The highest yearly passenger count at the airport during the AA Hub days was a little over 10 million, so we are not that far off. Currently we stand at around 9.2 million passengers per year. AA never had a huge presence here to begin with, so the loss of them wasn't as big a blow as one would imagine. AA used to fly the MD-80's and the 727's out of here for the most part, but now they just fly MD-80's and two 737's....so it is a small upgrade to a degree over their previous service. They have replaced some direct flights with connector flights to their hubs. But they have kept the best operating like LA, Miami, NYC, etc. They had the London flight and then stopped it, but I think (and many others in the know think) it was a bit premature for Nashville when they had it here. Start it now and it would be VERY successfull. Hands down.

Remember that list above isn't totally correct. A few of Southwest flights are not on ther like the San Jose flights from Nashville. I had limited time to come up with that list.

yeah, the FedEx ground hub is on the north side of town off briley pkwy. I don't know if "HQ" is official, since it's simply a division of fedex.

Just curious, how much bigger is FedEx than UPS? You never hear about all the cargo out of ATL from UPS. Of course, that could be that ATL has many legs to stand on, not just cargo.

I think FedEx Ground is based in Pittsburgh. FedEx bought RFS (I think that's the name) which was based in Pittsburgh in order to start services to rival UPS. I think they left the newly-formed FedExGround in Pitt.

Edit: Not to beat a dead horse, but here's a site, http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05072/470124.stm, 2005, with excerpt:

"Sullivan has returned the favor. As FedEx Ground has grown, so has its Pittsburgh headquarters. The company employs more than 2,000 people here in a hill-top administrative and operations center built above Montour Run Road in Moon. Another 200 work in distribution facilities in the region."

I don't know. I do know they own quite a few hundred acres in north Nashville where they have a massive warehouse and have a more than massive warehouse and terminal in LaVergne. I am talking hundreds of acres at that site to. There is a very steady, 24 hr., line of trucks that go into and out of both campuses. So who really knows. It is harder to track a trucking hub than an air hub. LOL!!!!

EDIT: So Pitt is the Ground HQ. In other words the offices? If that's the case, then Nashville is the ground "Hub". There is easily more than 2 grand that work in both campuses. LOL!! I am losing my mind trying to think about all this stuff. LOL!!! Like I said, who really knows.

Could be wrong, but I believe Louisville, KY serves as the largest UPS air facility.

I don't have any numbers, but I think Louisville is to UPS what Memphis is to FedEx. Memphis is the only place I've seen to compare to L'ville in terms of LOTS of HUGE planes constantly coming and going

I have never heard about ATL having any UPS hub operations

I do remember, when the US Postal Service was starting up their express service, they looked at the Smyrna airport (former Air Force facility) as a hub. The local residents pretty much shot that idea down. They didn't want all that air traffic.

Guess you could say they went 'Postal'.
