Welcome to Honolulu's Growing Culture & Arts District & NoHo….. NoHo means North of Hotel Street. This area was just designated last year as Honolulu's Culture & Arts District so its still in its development stage but this is a before hand look at what the art community has got to work with. There's still many buildings for rent so in time as more and more galleries move in it will really transform this once neglected area! So thanks to all the people with a vision for trying to make a change! :D

Here's a map of the area:

This area was recently designated as Honolulu's Arts & Cultural District, some in the art community have nicknamed this area NoHo or North of Hotel Street. Anyhow, there are many art galleries and stuff in this area and many more moving in and opening up. Thankfully the art community is trying to turn this area around because its known for crime and drugs mainly along Hotel Street however some of it spills over to Nu'uanu Avenue where the growing art community is located. There's a whole lot of work to be done but the community is trying their best to rid the area of crime and hold special events to attract more people to the area. Every Friday evening there is what is called "First Fridays" and the art galleries open there doors to everyone and usually feature live music, food, etc a whole bunch of entertainment mixed in. I think this area will be a really happening part of town in a few years as the arts community continues to grow and move in this area! Anyway this is a little of NoHo. :D

^Yeah well the official name of this particular area is "The Honolulu Culture & Arts District" which its basically part of the upper blocks of Chinatown, hence the Asian influence of some of the buildings or colors but some artists in the upper sections of the hood have started to dub the words NoHo. :D Anyhow, there has been a whole lot of interest in the area especially since the arts community started to move in this section of the city, they have really began to revive the area and spark a lot of interest and have also drawn people back. The only problem with the area nearby known as Hotel Street is the illegal activities that go on such as drug dealing, prostitution, etc however even thats starting to change as many in the art community have taken a stand by holding signs and letting those people know that they are not intimidated and will not tolerate those illegal activities! However, historically its been that way for probably over a 100yrs as it was officially known as Honolulu's Red Light District where protitution, brothels, etc were legal and opium dens were present underneath via old lava tubes! Anyhow, people are trying to get the area rezoned to allow for artists lofts above the many shops/businesses in the area, a totally awesome proposal! Historically the main people that lived above many of the businesses were the owners or people that ran the shops below but it may soon change for the better! :)
