Should call it the "Sunk".

This state needs to get its head out of the sand. Adding a train station to an airport that isnt even large enough to serve the west coast is silly. If this project is going to be remotely considered a success the airport will need to be expanded and we all know how that is going...

Part of the problem is finding planes that can make the west coast. Pushing it for an A320/737. Besides, direct flying is going the way of the dodo. Just not efficient enough - most flying is going to be done through hubs.

This plan really is about getting enough traffic to establish larger longer flights. Much of the real profitable flying - the business fares - come from the Boston Metro area, particularly the 128/mass pike corridor. Right now it is too easy to go to Boston instead of Green. If done right, and that means putting the money and effort into providing frequent efficient service and not trying to budget cut it out of existence, this will fix that - it will give Green a nice direct, cheap transportation link to the local economy. And in the long run it should also help link Providence itself up, and maybe finally get going enough that you will have the revenue to do projects without such huge tax bills. But you can only cut so many corners before you start whittling yourself away.

The project involved killing phragmites, or common reed, which had taken over the marsh area on the south side of the piers with a complex root system that was disrupting the ecosystem. After spraying and cutting away the phragmites, a construction team dug and reconfigured pre-existing channels. This allowed for the proper balance of salt and fresh water to enter and move through the marsh area. Allowing salt water to again access to the marsh will make it impossible for the invasive plants to thrive, and the appropriate biological diversity can be restored.

Oversight for the project was provided by the Maguire Group, with work by Natural Resource Services' Scott Rabideau and John Rocchio Corporation. QDC worked with Stephen's family to build and place the 12 by 16 inch markerat the entrance to the new shared use path. The peaceful outdoor location was especiallyimportant for Steven's parents, who live nearby.

"For my parents to go to the grave site, it's not a pleasant experience at all," said Stephen's brother, David, who initially contacted the QDC for help on the project.
Intermodal Overview
The Intermodal Project is a collaborative effort of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, working in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration. The $267 million transportation hub will allow MBTA commuter rail service to TF Green airport and Warwick, RI. This will be the closest rail line (1,570 feet) to a major airport terminal in the country.

The project is broken into four major areas of construction - the Terminal End Improvements (TEI); the Skywalk; the customer service operations building (CSO) and the parking garage and fueling platforms. These four major components of the Intermodal project are being built concurrently.

The project continues to move forward at a steady pace with the Skywalk structure crossing over Post Road. Next steps for construction include the connection of the Skywalk to the CSO structure sometime in July. There are no plans for additional road closures in the near future, however there may be some night work and therefore lane restrictions near the Airport’s departure and commercial roadways.

Terminal End Improvements (TEI)

TEI steel is 100% complete. Fireproofing is complete except for column work and intumesce white paint that will cover the spray fireproofing. Storm drains and safety divots are being installed. Demolition of existing masonry block took place during the last week of June on the 1st and 2nd floors of the terminal.

Skywalk

Overnight work on the Skywalk took place in mid-June. The Skywalk steel erection has crossed Post Road and steelwork is now more than 50%complete. Detailing work continues including installing hangers and conduits above and between piers. Temporary scaffolding has been built for workers to more easily access the skywalk. The permanent stair tower, at what is knows as the “knuckle,” has been constructed and allows for emergency egress only.

Work to install parapet walls on the Skywalk roof began this month. The placement of plywood, densglass and Styrofoam will follow.

CSO

Exterior building envelope work is taking place with installation of metal panels, sheathing, and insulation panels. Installation of interior metal panels has begun at the first floor level.

Major mechanical work including installation of the sewer line, storm drains, sanitary sections and cooling tower pipes are all complete. Installation of the CSO roof is schedule to start in mid July.

Installation of the sprinkler system is near complete. Storm drains are now finished.

Garage and Fueling Platform
Approximately 1,130 of the 3,400 pieces of pre-cast concrete for the garage and fueling platform have been placed. Detailing of precast concrete sections is ongoing with welding connections and caulking joints. Installation of the car wash reclamation tank is finished and drains and system connections have been placed. Reinforcing steel is ready for precast concrete curb to be placed on all floors of the facility.

Backfilling of precast columns is nearly finished. Excavation for underground drainage at the fueling platform has been finished and installation of sewer and other drainage has started.

The cast-in-place foundations for stair and elevator towers are being poured. The precast concrete erection continues from the north end moving toward the south.

All pile cap footings are complete. Concrete ramp walls, shear walls, and the garage parameter walls are ongoing. Back filling of perimeter walls continues. The north ramp foundations in the east garage have been poured. The southern ramp is scheduled to be poured in late June.

Why hope artiste village might not be so good for all of Pawtucket

This is why I hate this blogging thing. I haven't come across clearly. I apologize.

Please, let me clarify. I am NOT accusing Hope Artiste Village or anyone from Urban Smart growth of taking anything away from my neighborhood in any way at all. I repeat, I am not aware of any business from my neighborhood that has moved to Hope Artiste.

I brought it up because another person I was talking with about development in Pawtucket agrees there might be some problems with the phenomena of "harvesting" businesses for development projects from within the immediate community. I understand helping out a business that needs a place to go, absolutely. Who wouldn't admire anyone who tries to save a local business, that's a good thing, no argument there.

There's finally some really great things going on in this crazy little city/town, thanks to Hope Artiste, Pawt. foundation, the City and many unrecognized people who have worked really hard to make the good stuff stick. PPD rocked no doubt, buckets of thanks to everyone who helped out.

I also agree the extra "e" is maybe a tiny bit pretentious. I pronounce the words hope artiste, hope artist.

Kirsten used to make these awesome "bucket" tees. they're fantastic, it would be so cool if she made more. do you talk to them? if so, tell them Pam said yo.

T.F. Green Airport Developments

I feel like I've said this somewhere before, but I can't find it now. Anyway, am I the only one who feels, whenever Avedisian talks about the airport, that the proverbial shoe would be on the other foot if the city of Warwick owned Green, as the city of Manchester owns its airport?

QUOTE

Avedisian said he would have appreciated it if representatives of the Chamber had at least met with the city to hear its concerns, which besides health and safety include the still-unanswered question of who is going to pay to relocate community recreation fields that will be displaced.

Don't worry Scotty, I'm pretty sure we've all heard your side of the case once, twice, or umpteen times before.

Keep kicking that horse, Mayor.

QUOTE

Avedisian also contended that the airport is not necessarily synonymous with a boon to business. He estimated that if the city was compensated for at least half the taxes the airport would pay if it were a private entity, the commercial tax rate in the city would drop by about 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.

I would love to see numbers concerning how much the airport contributes to the city's economy. Avedisian has been crying hardship a lot lately. I'm not buying it.

Looking back through this thread, I saw a report from 2007 stating that Green contributes $2B annually to the local economy. That figure would surely be substantially lower in 2009, but still we're talking about a huge economic generator here, and how much of that economic impact centers directly on Warwick, the modern gateway to Rhode Island?
