I'm an avid flickr user and many people blog my photos. That's all well and good as long as they attribute the image to me since its my intellectual property. There have been many cases on flickr, however, where photos have been taken and sold under the names of others. Clearly that is illegal.

I don't see that as the case here. Wayne's images were re-formatted/re-hosted, but it was clearly cited where they were from. He was given total credit for the work, and no one tried to pawn off the design as their own.

I respect GRDad0f3's, decision to grant the request for removal, especially since this is a privately owned forum and considering the character and esteem of the person making the request.

However, I still think we should be able to talk about what we saw. Despite my initial "clown college" comment, I think there were some pieces to the design that were good urban decisions. Having the debate or discussion is difficult without the images.

Last year I was at a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Phoenix, AZ on a sunny afternoon and they only had a single row of lights around the perimeter of the store turned on. There was so much natural light coming in that you really didn't even notice until you looked up and saw that the fluorescent lighting was off. I wish Meijer would incorporate this into some, if not all, of their stores. Obviously the energy savings would not be as great in Grand Rapids as they would be in Phoenix, but I would think they would pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time, not to mention the non-monetary benefits of energy conservation.

Interesting release re: Meijer settlement w/State:

PRSA/BEPS Statement on Meijer Case
Involving Michigan Campaign Finance Act

NEW YORK (May 16, 2008) – The Public Relations Society of America’s Board of Ethics and Professional Standards is continuing to review the facts surrounding the Meijer/Acme Township Conciliation Agreement with the Michigan Secretary of State and the role public relations professionals may have played in the events and actions leading up to this agreement.

While the PRSA Board of Ethics and Professional Standards (BEPS) has no authority to issue sanctions or penalties against a member of the Society, it is important to draw members’ attention to real-world situations that can be used as ethical learning experiences. The facts, stated in the Meijer Conciliation Agreement and the local media, indicate that some professional actions were clearly contrary to the spirit of the PRSA Code of Ethics’ professed values of transparency, openness and honesty. It would appear that the intent was not to educate the public to help make an informed decision but rather influence the voters in an undisclosed and unethical fashion.

As “ethical practice is the most important obligation of a PRSA member,” we should affirm that the best course of action for an ethical practitioner is to counsel against activities such as undisclosed front groups and remind clients that honesty and transparency are fundamental to ethical business practices. BEPS has affirmed this counsel to members in its Practice Standards Advisories PSA #3 and PSA #7.

Currently, there have been no findings of criminal or civil wrongdoing by anyone involved in the Meijer case. PRSA members understand however that “those who have been or are sanctioned by a government agency or convicted in a court of law of an action that is in opposition to the PRSA Code of Ethics may be barred from membership or expelled from the Society.” (PRSA Code of Ethics Member Pledge)

Alpine Ave. Wal-mart Construction Updates

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=39960&view=findpost&p=975787

http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=39960&view=findpost&p=975787

Well I finally got a chance to venture into the new wal-mart supercenter and this is my experience. We entered the store through the garden center entrance. Inside the garden center are some really big ceiling fans with lots of blades on them. Kinda like what you wouild find in Navy Pier. So I head inside and the first thing I noticed was all the skylights that are in the new wal mart. If one would notice, when it's a nice and sunny day out, the store lights most of them are turned off until nighttime. They are probabily doing this to save energy. Things I like about the new walmart supercenter. Aisles are much wider than the old store and it's not all that crammed compared to the old store. I think it has a better electronics section compared to meijer's e4 section. Mainly has more to offer. I also like the graphics program they have compared to the old store. Now I noticed the ceiling isn't as snow white as meijer's. What I did not like was the produce section had some awful smells and prices for a head of lettuce were more than meijer's lettuce. I would not buy certain types of groceries from there. But otherwise, it's better than the old store. I do want to ask this. Was the store really needed? Why couldn't they add the grocery section to the exhisting store?

Someone was showing design potential. There is nothing to suggest otherwise. There are rumblings here and there, and we here in our enthusiasm tend to take these things and blow them up more then they should be, certainly more than the originators of a project would have intended. It has happened more than once where UPGR gets lit up for a couple days / weeks / months, over something that a.doesn't end up happening, or b. was never going to happen to begin with.
Since every gov't position is an elected one, they're not forcing anything on you that cannot be changed if it's unpopular. For example, look at the towns in Ottawa County repealing their ban on Sunday beer, wine, and in some cases also alcohol sales.

Since there are no federal laws making tabacco use illegal, states have rights to enact and enforce their own laws. If this proves to be unconstitutional, it can be taken to the Supreme Court ... with a few stops along the way. Nonetheless, smoking related deaths and illnesses are a greater burden on state resources than alcohol related issues. Not to say alcohol related issues are any less important. Those taxes on smokes aren't to line the states very shallow pockets, it's to help offset smoking related (diabetes, cancer, heart desease, lung desease, etc.) care for the uninsured. Your government is obligated to protect you, citizen or not, and if it means a non smoker is not subjected to the potential harm of second hand smoke, so be it.

More pieces fall into place, from the Walker city engineer. (I may not have all the answers, but I can figure out where to get them.)

The City Commission has reviewed this situation and made the decision to remove the gate and open up Vet's Drive from Maynard to the east cul-de-sac. They also directed staff to facilitate a small parking area near the cul-de-sac. It is my understanding that they will revisit this issue this winter to determine if they want to keep the road open past 2008.
We held a public meeting with the neighboring property owners last week to inform them of the CC decision. We are decertifying the portion of Vet's drive east of the cul-de-sac. That process will take place in the coming weeks.
Later this fall the DPW, Engineering and Police departments will provide a short report to the CC on how the roadway operated over the 2008 year. [Veloise emphasis follows:] That might be a good time for residents or property owners to voice any favor or displeasure with the decision to open the roadway to traffic.

I asked about sharing these comments, and got a green light. The argument is made that many projects walk a fine line when trying to get off the ground (financing, tax credits, city approvals, investors, etc). Many times they involve tenant poaching from other office buildings. So if a rendering leaks out, it might cause the possible tenant's current leaseholder to work to keep the tenant, thus killing the project.
I guess this got bumped because someone voted. Has anyone noticed any differences since last June? I am coming up on my first full year of living downtown (and loving it!), but haven’t noticed much change. I think it’s all a part of what you buy into if you move downtown.

I’m really excited for them to finish the Fitzgerald, since I am interested to see what effect, if any, a building full of homeowners will have on the surrounding area, especially that building GrandLAN’s in, the neighboring parking lot (across from the Civic) and Veteran’s Park.
