Ok... obviously Folsom and the rest of our corrupt Legislature needs to go look at a road atlas. First off, I really doubt too many Midwesterners travel down 43 to get to Mobile/the Alabama Gulf Coast. A much better route would be to take I-55 to Jackson, US 49 to Hattiesburg, and US 98 on to Mobile. Most of that route is straightforward and 4-laned (except for, of course, the Alabama portion...). Also, it would serve a sparsely-populated portion of Alabama, and most people from Huntsville, Birmingham, and Montgomery wouldn't need to use it. I doubt the traffic counts warrant a full-blown freeway. So there's really no point in building one. All that needs to be done is build a 4-lane/straightened out US 43, with freeway-standard portions north of Mobile, around Tuscaloosa, and maybe around some of the larger towns, similar to what Mississippi did to US 45. The state should concentrate its priorities to building the Florence-Huntsville-Atlanta highway, bypasses around the Big 4, and the Montgomery-Panama City tollway. This state really needs to quit blowing its money on "roads to nowhere".

Thanks for posting the info on the Florida group, Glenn.

More information on the proposal was released at a Monday press conference in Dothan. Plans call for the highway to be built in a public/private partnership between private investors; Houston, Geneva and Dale counties in Alabama; and Jackson, Bay and Washington counties in Florida. The highway could be built to interstate standards within five years and turned over to the individual counties after the road is paid for in 30 years, although there is currently no timeline for completion.

Focus 2000, an Alabama corporation, will design, build and operate the toll road. The route will follow the ALDOT-identified route west of Dothan in Alabama, but the Florida route hasn't been determined yet.

Counties asked to endorse toll road

Proposed route for the I-10 connector around Dothan

Second Cherokee might 600 people at most. Third The interchange in Barton (not Cherokee) was established as part of the deal to get National Alabama boxcar plant to locate here. I'm sure most people are unaware of the lack of good paying jobs in my area (our unemployment rates are low, but most people around here work in the service industry, and struggle to make it by on a little more than minimum wage). When the people of the Shoals went out and voted to increase our sales taxes to get companies to locate here, it was out of desparation. The state had little to do with the planning of the interchange, other than it was a necessity to get the plant to locate here. Also, the Shoals area is the second largest metro area in North Alabama, and has been shafted for decades when it comes to road construction/projects. We have lost countless potential employers due to the fact that the nearest interstate is 60 miles away in Decatur/Athens... So before people start complaining about the interchange being built, take into consideration what we don't have, and compare it to all that the cities along and east of I-65 do have. Just my two cents

I'm not complaining about somebody else getting one interchange especially now that I know it is one in North Alabama :-) I feel the whole area(North Alabama) needs an east-west expressway. The whole area is undeserved as far as transportation, its a shame though that areas that really need improvement in Huntsville aren't getting it anytime soon like Winchester Road (and don't count that little 1/4 mile widening of Winchester this summer it doesn't address the most congested area of the road thats not planned until at least 2012-2014).. and US 72 especially with the metro being the fastest growing area in the state as far as population growth and new jobs over the past several years. I say build the east-west expressway connecting somehow to Memphis maybe not directly but at least to the new I-22, have it going through the major metros of North Alabama or very close to them (Shoals, Decatur, Huntsville, Albertville/Guntersville) and connecting on the East to Atlanta that will greatly improve economic development and infrastructure for the rest of North Alabama.

The city may apply to get Mountain Brook Village on the National Historic Register, which apparently would mean that federal highway funds couldn't be used to destroy it.
