The Crowne Plaza at Peachtree Avenue is going to be really nice. Although it's technically outside of SPI-9 they'll adopt the streetscapes.

There will also be a 9 story Hampton Inn at Irby, on the Rio Bravo site. Not ultra luxury, but a nice urban hotel with underground parking and shuttle service to the MARTA stations. The SPI will be expanded to include this so it will also meet the requirements.

I sure would like to know who owns/runs local retailer "Know Style." They are showing up in every mall, in prime locations. They have no website so they must not be national. The latest store is in the highly-desirable former Polo Ralph Lauren store in Lenox. It's on the first level, in the middle concourse of the mall - the highest traffic area. The store is a large space and would be perfect for a great high-end retailer new to Atlanta. Yet Simon has chosen to lease the space to this Know Style store with their tacky cardboardish sign. How the heck do they afford the overhead?? In Perimeter Mall, they're in the old Forth & Towne spot. I always find it tacky when a store opens and just uses their predeccesor's layout.

In other Lenox news, the relocated Pottery Barn store will, at 33,000 square feet, be the largest Pottery Barn in the chain when it opens later this year. Pottery Barn Kids will relocate to the existing Pottery Barn. J. Crew's concept Madewell is opening next to the new Pottery Barn in Lenox as well.

True - even though the majority of Atlanta metro residents are supporting an additional tax (at least what I believed I read a few months ago from AJC), it would take approval from the state legislature. And I don't think it's in the state legislature's best interest for an additional sales tax potentially impact the state's money making scheme.

There are a lot of states where there is a bad relationship between primary city & rural state - but it is the most disgusting in Georgia. Unfortunately, the state of Georgia will always be Atlanta's biggest road block. The state has roadblocked special taxing options for transit & development projects in Atlanta, properly funding education, enforcing stricter land use controls & preserving green space from encroaching sprawl.

Perhaps soon the gubnah' will be encouraging everyone to pray to jeebus that Atlanta traffic won't be as bad as it will continue to be.

If you're one of the lucky few who just so happens to live and work near a marta line, its pretty effective. Or if you live in Fulton or Dekalb counties the busses are pretty regular and easy to use but yeah marta is not even close to being on the same level as CTA (Chicago), MTA (New York; this is an unfair comparison though because New York has recieved ungodly amounts of federal money throughout its history to fund rail. Thus, New York MTA is on a whole 'nother level from every state or city) or MBTA (aka the T -Boston). I can't say I've ever had any experiences with BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit -san francisco) but my sister likes it ok.

The problems with atlanta aren't with marta (it IS fairly large... Somewhat lol) but with Atlanta being so sprawled out of control with no thought to transit. Atlanta really needs to develop more around marta outside of downtown. As is, Im sure it would cost WAY to much money to get marta to effectivly cover most of metro Atlanta. With subdivisions going every which way, you would have to build... well more lines and branches from those lines and branches from those branches then the state or fed has money for. While not completely hopeless, I fear that Atlanta has pretty much sealed its fate of being the next LA... so sprawled out, you really have no choice BUT to drive. Don't feel too bad though. CTA has had an uphill battle the last few years to fully fund its operations. It's really becoming a serious issue in Chicago. Here in Nashville we'll be lucky just to get rapid bus transit in the next few years so it looks like public transit is an issue just about everywhere nowadays.

When I lived in Atlanta, I drove like everyone else.

Maria Saporta's column reported that the business community is ticked off with the state legislature's failure to do something about Atlanta's transprotation issues.

Now the AJC reports that 58% of respondents in 11 metro counties favor a 1 cent sales tax to fund a specific list of transportation projects, including rail and bus service. The survey was conducted in March for the Transit Planning Board.

The survey comes less than a month after a narrow, last-minute vote in the General Assembly failed to pass (by three votes) legislation that would allow counties in Georgia to join together and tax themselves to fund transportation projects.

QUOTE

The transit board is holding public comment sessions on a wide-ranging plan that would roughly double the costs of transit in the region to $54 billion. The plan calls for expanding MARTA in three directions, lacing the region with bus lines and adding light rail networks that link spots within metro Atlanta and connect it to more distant places such as Athens and Gainesville.

Cobb County Chairman Sam Olens, who sits on the transit board, said greater leadership is needed from the Capitol. "I think that what we've had from the state is a vision that if we do nothing, people will continue coming with those high-paying jobs," he said. "We have more darn plans ...
Here is a link to the latest AJC article on the beltline. A lot of things happening; all of it good. The article does seem to confirm that the demoltion of buildings for the North Avenue Park is indeed underway.

http://www.ajc.com/search/content/metro/st...ketour0421.html

FWIW: I live about a block from the North Avenue Park and several abandoned warehouses have been demolished. Some of the walls are still up and you can see all sorts of graffiti inside these old warehouses. This morning my wife was accosted inside the workout room at our condo by a homeless fellow. It seems like the destruction of these warehouse pushed this fella out of the warehouses and into our developemnt. As a resident of the "Old Fourth Ward" I think it is great that we are demolishing abandoned buildings that shelter vagrants and car thiefs. Yet Atlanta must follow up. Where will the homeless go? Will they merely sleep and hang out in the new North Avenue Park; or will they get the services and shelter they need. Is Atlanta merely pushing a problem out to another area?

I had no idea planning for this particular park was this far along and it looks GREAT! This is just what this part of the city needs.

About the TADs, the bill concerning the issue passed the legislature. There will be a referendum on the issue this fall that will change state law if it passes.

Also the city will take longer than expected to move from City Hall East so the sale of the property will be delayed until June 15, 2009.
Good Morning,

I live off of Ralph McGill Blvd close to where the proposed beltine will go through. While I was very disappointed with the ruling against the TAD, I have been very excited by the North Avenue park. Right now if you drive along Ralph Mcgill Blvd or Dallas Blvd you will see that several old warehouse have been torn down. I am pretty sure that this is to make way for the park, although I have been unable to verify this. I am excited, for may reasons, it is a sign that our beloved beltline project is moving forward. It will clear out some of the criminal element that has used this network of warehouses to hide out in. (We have a lot of car breakins on Ralph McGill) Most of all more greenspace for all of our fine citizens to enjoy. For those who are unaware, "plans" are for the City Hall East to be converted from government office to a mixed use activity center. North Avenue Park will originally span about 16 acres from the former City Hall East on North Avenue to Ralph Mcill Blvd. It could then be expanded to around 32 acres and head further south all the way to Freedom Parkway. It will include a pond, dog parks, and skate park. If anyone else has any info please add it. I apologize in advance if this topice has been discussed in another thread or further up in this thread.

Link to park plans
http://www.beltline.org/LinkClick.aspx?fil...24&mid=3547

Link to City Hall East plans
http://www.poncepark.org/

Tin Drum Asia Cafe will be joining the downtown restaurant lineup, taking the spot near the Flatiron Building that formerly housed a Brazilian churrascaria (Fogao Gaucho). I was surprised that Fogao lasted as long as it did.
