The Montage on Lake Avenue?

I think downtown could be filled with rentals and be successful. If there were affordable rentals downtown when I graduated from UCF in 99, I would have much rathered live downtown than any other part of Orlando. At the time, I rented over by the airport at Lee Vista. These developers just need to have realistic expectations on what they can charge for rent but the demand is definitely there. Once the performance center is built, the Montage will have an easy time converting these to condos since this is only a block away.

Not sure if anyone has noticed this or not but, if you see the promo that 27 is doing for that "greatest sale star search contest", it looks like the guy in the commercial is the guy that's the mascot (ABC Man). Oh and that contest they're doing ("Watch and Win"), is about as stupid as the promotion they did sometime back, "You'll love our news."

I do think that Dorsett and Nancy do have great chemistry on-air. I'm wondering though since Dorsett does the noon and 5, if this means that she's going to be let go soon. Remember, years ago, Rick Boone did the exact same thing and wound up leaving for Carolina.

It will be used by the Indie Film Jam next weekend as part of the Florida Music Festival. The FMF will also have some of the low key bands and musicians playing there as well. In general, the space is not good for sound and picture. The seating is not on an incline except for a few seats in the very back. All the seats are convention / cafeteria style chairs and are very uncomfortable for a full length presentation whether it be live or screened. That doesn't even get into the rental rates that are charged, of which I have no knowledge. I am sure it has to do with funding, but another gripe I have about City Arts Factory is that there are no set hours. You never can tell when it will be open.

Everyone's favorite president says that things aren't the way everyone would like it to be, but we are not in a recession. Besides, with these rebate checks hitting our economy... things will be looking good very soon.

On the economy topic, aren't we borrowing from the Chinese already? So if we borrow money to give out to our taxpayers to spur the economy and then buy all kinds of products from Japan (Best Buy) and China (Walmart), we're kinda just giving money to other countries that we borrowed from them in the first place. Maybe when the economy is going bad next year, too, we can just give a few million dollars straight to China and skip the middleman.

Don't get me wrong, I like when the check passes through me first, but it is only making up for the increase in the cost of goods.

Tangent...

Since everyone follows UAE projects, there was a little story on NPR today about Masdar City. I did want to get an ice cream and then a coffee from Volcano's, but they had been closed for an hour. I think it was around 9pm. Well, at least I was able to get coffee ice cream. I wonder if that's caffeinated???

I wish something could be done with the timing of the traffic lights along North Monroe from John Knox northwards to Callaway/Megginis Arm. I get off work at 11pm at night and by the time I get to north Monroe it's about 11:15pm but all those traffic lights are still on full rush-hour cycles. My biggest gripe is with the Lakeshore light because you can't get past it from Sharer. Almost every time the red light catches you and it doesn't matter if there is no one in the turn lanes either northbound or southbound, it's still going through the complete cycle. And on those RARE ocassions when Lakeshore doesn't catch you, the light at Callaway/Megginis Arm will. Furthermore, with the price of gas being so high those lights SHOULD be timed so that traffic flows SMOOTHLY through all those intersections ESPECIALLY after 11pm. But there is no way one can make all green lights doing the speed limits. And on many nights, you'll catch the red lights at Allen, Sharer, & Lakeshore and only after being stopped at Lakeshore will you make it through Callaway/Megginis Arm without a red light catching you there. If anyone knows who needs to know about this who can actually do something, would you please pass along this complaint? I tried to find some emails addy's and wasn't successful.

Last time I was in Wally-mart I needed some help and had to literally chase down an employee to ask my question.
^Yep you are correct GG. The City/County Commission more times than not follows the recommendation of the Planning Agency, but not always.

I understand your point TD, but in the case of the Mahan proposal they were asking for the maximum density. I'm sure someone can come up w/a decent compromise between 50 and 509 units for the development of that parcel.

As for the Bradfordville proposal, the NIMBY's in that area are a strong coalition. When I went to a Board of Adjustment's meeting last year, Kohl's wanted the tiniest change to their sign and about 20 folks from there showed up against it even though IMHO the sign change request was more aesthetically pleasing than what the code called for.

I'm not up that way much so I'd seriously like to ask "Is office development on Bradforville Rd. at Velda Dairy a smart move economically?" Just how far is that intersection from where B'ville meets T'ville?

I am thinking about moving to Jacksonville. I would like to live downtown - but have read various websites that say great and really bad things both. It seems to be still in a major transitional period. I am used to city living - so some homeless and petty crimes don't concern me, but is the city working on bringing more housing downtown and cleaning the area up? Is there good housing (probably rental) choices? When I state downtown, I mean the business district area. Any input would be great.

This is the first time that the poker run will be pairing up with a charity. Angel Flight Southeast, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer pilot organization involved in "public benefit flying." We provide a variety of services to the community, but mostly we arrange free air transportation by private aircraft to distant medical facilities when commercial service is not available, impractical or simply not affordable.
I'm not sure if a 2518 seat theatre could be indie. Now, if perchance, you foreshortened the audience house and converted the rear of the current audience house into another facility, you would serve well both interests of the 'new' spaces you created. By making the front of the current balcony (100') the rear of a loge/balcony affair, you would get a much more intimate and less acoustically challenged venue as well as a new space of about 40' x 117'.

As with the ill-fated (at least so far) movie theaters at the plaza, the cheapest bit of a theater is the box it lives in. Especially in live theater with a fly system, you have to have to have structures to support great live loads and the rigging to transfer moving scenery to those structures. Then the power, lighting, sound, and in the case of movie theaters the lighting is replaced by the projection systems. Just something to think about as we contemplate what tearing down a working theater really means as to its ease of replacement, as well as getting the 12 movie theater multi-plex off the ground.

I find it sad that our city leaders think the new PAC means no need for the Carr. NYC has 38 broadway houses, multiple off-broadway, opera, ballet, concert, etc houses. Are we such a hick town that it is thought we cannot support two working major procenium theatres plus an opera/symphony/ballet house?

Um, you do have a rather top notch film, video, and animation school right down the road, don't you? I don't know, maybe I am missing something here, but it would seem to me that a school like that should be more than able to keep a small theater like the Carr going if they specialized in independent and anime movies. And maybe bring a lot of that creative culture downtown to where one wants to build a creative village.

You can turn the Carr into an independent movie theater downtown partially subsidized by Orlando art patrons. Don't get me wrong, I like the Enzian, but it's Maitland and they get Orlando money. Let Maitland and Winter Park keep the Enzian going. We could have an independent theater and a mainstream theater. The Enzian has a hard time keeping up with all the indie fare that is available anyway.

From my perspective, I still find that Orlando is all about having the latest, greatest, grandest thing, and who cares about whether it was worth it or not. I think too many of those in power in Orlando want the PAC more for the glory of being associated with it instead of what is the best value, It is, in essence, the McMansion of public buildings. Then again, I am in favor of the PAC - but I think you need to go out there a little more with it than just another pretty but mindless building. But why destroy the Carr just because you built a new venue? Keep them both. The Carr can be put to use for so much more than just mainline shows. There's room for more in Orlando. Every one talks about a creative center, yet they destroy the only thing they have that has any semblance of creativity! They should keep the Carr as the cornerstone of an Alternative district.

QUOTE (Camillo Sitte @ May 7 2008, 12:19 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The answer to that is quite simple really – Starwoods.

Sheraton is a Starwoods brand and as such members of Starwoods frequent stay programs [Preferred, Gold, and Platinum] can both earn and use points, receive free upgrades, free meals, etc.

During the hurricanes of a few years ago I ended up spending about 10 nights in the Grand Bohemian when it was a Westin property. Westin is also a Starwoods brand and as an SPG Platinum I received a free upgrade to a junior suite, free food and drinks in the club lounge, free valet parking, and a free NYTimes every morning.

When Starwoods heard that several of their Plats were staying at the Westin because of the storms they comped us two nights. My total bill was about $5,700 before savings. As an SPG Plat I received 10 nights in an upgraded room, two free nights, free valet parking, free internet, and free food so, with a single-room rack rate of $300 per night, with a free upgrade to a $450 per night junior sweet and all of the rest I saved a good $1100 over what some schmuck walking in off the street would have paid.

If the Westin had not been there then I would have sought out the next closest SPG property which in this case [though not at that time] would have been the Sheraton and I would have received substantially the same benefits though admittedly in not nearly as nice a property.

Also consider that many vacationers and convention attendees are also SPG members, many of whom would find the Downtown Sheraton a perfect solution, particularly considering that Orlando's other SPG properties [save the Dolphin and Swan] are old, run-down crap tourist hotels. Many frequent travelers, even affluent one can be hardcore about accumulating points and receiving free upgrade perks. I just spent a week in Paris at the Westin - for free, while everyone else was paying 350 Euros per night [$525] for a single. Sure I could have afforded the standard rate but given that I end up staying in hotels X-number of nights a year why not narrow it down to one or two loyalty programs and collect the points to redeem later.

And that is why many a savvy business traveler would stay at the Downtown Orlando Sheraton.

hey! welcome back! good to hear from you. you should see how I got hammered on SSC about the CFRAIL issue.

thanks for posting about the Starwoods rewards program, b/c I was trying to figure out how the main company, general, could support a property that was slightly off the beaten path with business; i.e., the TT example came to mind... how would the 5-star brand help support that hotel (if built)-- would they do national or industry-wide marketing to book the rooms from the corporate level versus from the actual hotel itself?
